The Old Folks Home

I had 50 lbs. of wheat bran to "heat disinfect" in the oven. I buy organic wheat bran in bulk for my mealworms. They also get organic carrots. My chickens love them, and they're easy to raise. 50 pounds is a lot of batches. When I got done heating, cooling, and bagging the bran, I began cleaning out all my mealworm boxes, sorting them, and bagging up the worms. I was at it all day. Dd # 1 vacuumed the kitchen, so when she got done, I did the entire house. With the floors all vacuumed, I decided to run my floor scrubber, and get them totally clean. I just got done, and decided to catch up reading posts on here. I'm whipped.
That is a lot of cleaning!

morning all :)

there's a new series on the telly here on the history of the corner shop. A family dress up and play the parts required by handbooks of the eras and historical advisors, residents on the street are the customers, and it's been quite entertaining and informative. They started in the 1890's, when corner shops did here apparently, and each programme does a few decades. So we've gone from milk in churns and customers bringing their own jugs etc., to last night's show which included the 1930s and 40s, including WWII of course, and rationing. One of the customers is an old man who lived through the blitz in Sheffield, where this is set.

I imagine it was a very different experience in the US (did you even have rationing?), but it was quite timely here given the news about panic buying of loo rolls etc in Hong Kong, Australia and elsewhere. Customers looked in astonishment at the rations allowed ("we have to share one egg?!") and some of the substitutions were fun (custard powder ice-cream was apparently delicious, while carrot lollies were not :gig). The only loo roll then was Izal, a disinfectant impregnated hard paper that I remember in my grandparents' house. I think I'd rather use leaves!
Yes, there was rationing. My Dad remembered it vividly and my Mom a bit. Dad was born in 1937 and Mom in 1940.

The US also had recycling drives to provide metal for the war effort and the auto manufactures made the tanks planes and etc. I watched a show that said, I think, that GM made the body of the Sherman tank and that Chrysler made the engines. The Engines were two supercharged car engines!

My poor husband. If it isn't one thing it's another. Dr. had him come in for his yearly physical. We didn't need to be told that he's declining. It's sure hard to carry on a conversation with him, but I can figure it out most of the time. While there at the docs I reminded him that his last Dr was watching his scrotum. ..that sounded funny...😁. Anyway, he did have the blood test last year..that's nice they check that way now days. Blood test again. It's doubled in size. 😔. Going in for an ultra sound this morning. If, he needs it removed, I need to ask if a block can be done instead of him going under anesthesia. I've learned that can bring a dramatic decline on in Alzheimer patients. Now, I haven't let my my mind go to the big C word too seriously. Of course it's come to mind, but where it's been enlarged for years, I'm thinking it's just that, and will probably need to be removed. I'm going to post this in a few places, because I know a lot of folks will offer up a prayer or two for us. I sure love you guys. 💜.
I hope it all goes well!

Anesthesia is also bad for MS patients. I would thing that it is bad for many with neurological illnesses

Good news It is not cancer...... However i will need to keep a check on it. I might have to have it removed later even if not cancer. It is pressing on the nerve to the rt side of my mouth and check. I gave a great big sigh and thank you Good LORD.
The nerve pressure could be a problem for sure and maybe painful!

Good news on it not being cancer

You should be given you posted after 1 AM this morning!

Yes, as noted. I have a bottle of "Geo. A. Dickel & Co Cascade Distillery" whiskey that came from DW's aunt and uncle 15+ years ago. There is a label on it "apologizing" for the cork saying "This seal substituted temporarily for metal caps the European war having made it impractical to obtain caps"

And ALL the copper heat pipes in the Shelburne Farms (Electra Havemeyer Webb, look her up) were removed and donated.

And encouraged to have chickens!
Unlike now when people are having to "fight city hall" for the right to have a few chickens in the yard.

We have no rats we have seen but moles or voles not sure which.. Our outside cats are both big boy's ... Even the two dogs eat the ones they can catch
I and a dream bout gophers holes last night. It was an odd one to have since we do not have them in Woodland!

We did have them at the orchard growing up though
