The Old Folks Home

No, I don't think so at this time. The little one is growing, and it doesn't take that long before it too, will be able to drink from a bucket. I like the bucket system. I have the rubber ones, not plastic. At least every other day, if not every day, they get dumped, sprayed down good, and filled. They get thoroughly washed on a regular basis. I know their water is almost always clean, and fresh. While a more automated system might need less daily tending, they too need to be broken down on a regular basis for cleaning. The more complex, the harder to break down, and thoroughly clean.
I have two like this:

One has a float and hose connection and is an auto water system. The other I fill when it is empty.

They work great here. They are not as good in places where it freezes

@getaclue that is cruel and inhuman punishment talking about cooling down. It's 52 degrees here right now with a north wind at 15 mph. It's highs in the 50s until next Wednesday when it starts to moderate. I'm actually seeing 80° late next week which will be nice. I hate it when the weatherman is right....

I hope we get some produce too, Ron. My potatoes are looking good and they are going to be covered tonight along with our onions turnips, beets and peas. They are still calling for frost which means I will be dropping buckets over the tomatoes and squash also....and keeping our fingers crossed:fl

I'd love to have a waterer like that, Ron. Unfortunately it would have to be swapped out in the winter but it might be worth going to something like that over the summer months due to the problem below.

@KDOGG331 I use a heated pet bowl also. My big complaint about it is that I keep finding mice floating belly up in it. Idiot rodents. I was out dropping bait in accesses I have between the wall studs yesterday so hopefully it will do it's job. Funny thing is that I seldom see a mouse and when I do, I usually find it you guessed it, in the water bowl the next day. Go figure.:idunno

Potatoes were a favorite in times of war! Carrots too. They do will in cold and if the Army got close you could chop the tops off and hide the produce

Ewwww that is nasty!!! We have a rat problem we’ve been trying to deal with. We have poison stations out and it’s been being eaten but I still saw some rats a couple weeks ago when I went to move something. Talk about gross LOL but the one station was completely empty so we refilled it so hopefully that will do its job. Thinking of moving the food inside at night too and probably setting up another bait station in a different spot where they also are. I’m also not sure if it’s them eating it or not because come to think of it, I haven’t seen any chipmunks in a long time....

Anyway, never really see mice but we definitely have rats.

Wow. Put a little blurb out on the Poultry Swap page for our state and in 15 minutes all my available chicks were spoken for. Tomorrow is pickup day, but this one -- blue-feathered Olive Egger -- went off yesterday to a repeat customer.

I've now got a waiting list for the next hatch on 5/24.
Love it when the birds support themselves! Now, if only the dogs would catch a clue...
