Today was my middle grand's birthday. The cake was ordered yesterday. Dd #1 went to pick it up, and it was beautiful. After the singing, wishing, and candle blowing, we cut the cake. Surprise! It wasn't chocolate. It was vanilla. I mentioned that it didn't appear to be whipped cream icing, either. It was a strawberry butter creme. It was ok, but not anything close to what was ordered.
 
Our garden is at an apex of production right now, so neighbors and chickens enjoying the surplus. Not enough tomatoes for canning, but our few plants kick out about 3 a day for salads and sandwiches. The corn is about to come in. Squash are on steroids. For some reason the chard thrived in our blistering summer sun, so no shortage of greens and fiber. This year was a scattering of sunflower seeds in the beds. So nice to have sunny bouquets inside!

I am a firm believer that veggies are curative in nature and sugar is inflammatory. Had some Oreo-like cookies last night with our movie and this morning my joints are whining pitifully. Beercan is spot-on about the dairy aspect. I switched to goat milk a while back and life got a whole lot better. Now I've weaned off of that onto nut milk for drinking and coffee doctoring. We've got an Almond Cow machine (a nut milk maker that looks like a percolator coffee pot) and concoct an almond/cashew/hemp/coconut/date mix that's pretty darn tasty. (Still use dairy for cooking, though.) Cheese is my downfall.

Comparatively, our maladies are minor, few and far between compared to others in our immediate family and friends. Whenever I feel I'm having a down health day and getting whiny about it, I think of my college friend Jeff who got the whammy diagnosis of MS, epilepsy AND prostate cancer on the same day and how his life was radically altered (ended up homeless) as a result...and then I shut up and count my blessings. Nobody makes it through this life unscathed, and the older you are the harder it gets. Hopefully you get tougher and stalwart in attitude as you trundle along your journey or, at least, more philosophical. Focus on the positive as we all have many, many, many things to be thankful for. So grit your teeth and SHINE!
