Two of mine justed started laying too and I always thought if they don't lay before December, you have to wait till the days get longer!Nope. Two are pullets but they just reached POL this week and started laying even though it's winter temps here. Surprising but not unheard of. The other two are 2 years old and not winter laying breeds. One is Ameraucana the other is a barn yard cross. I have two like this. They resemble Golden Comets but are smaller and more smooth feathered.
Is that hormone related?Me to @lovesfarms. I thought for sure that since neither had started to lay by November, they would just wait till early spring. At first I thought maybe the warmer temps we have been having had some effect on them but no, remembered that it's the amount of daylights effect on their pineal glands that controls their laying.
Guess they know what they are doing. But none of them are confiding in me.
The amount of light effects the Hens estrogen levels-- needs about 14 hours for the level to lay eggs:My mom always got up at 5:00 to take the kerosene lanterns out to the chickens and feed them. But I never did read how it works in a chicken. I don't wake my chickens up in the morning but I'm also not selling eggs as an income like Mom did.
