In the spring, I grab the shovel and go into the run where I proceed to spade the ground around the inner fence line. It's hysterical to watch the hens reactions, jumping on the shovel, and yeah, climbing into the hole.

What amazes me is that they see bugs that I can't see.

My Fayoumi hens ate so many worms last spring that they all had to be wormed in the summer. They are supposed to be resistant but evidently worms in Missouri are potent.

Dont get me started on worms!!
The sound or sight of the spade causes bedlam, 7 little ladies, their little legs going fast to be first in the hole!!
They love worms so much, we’ve been relandscaping the garden and we have a lot of heavy wet clay soil, h#ll to dig but such enormous worms, I do feel quite sorry for them, they show their faces and to greet them are 7 pairs of beady eyes!!! Worm suicide!!!
The girls have eaten baby birds as well but that was in the summertime.

Not only do they peck the worms, who ever gets the worm gets a peck on the head from the others who wanted it unless her legs can carry her away fast enough!!

Beautiful place... but are you full in the trees? So dark amd dreary all winter?

We’re in the Forest but we live in a little hamlet with three more houses, we have an open large field next to us which opens space and light for us so it’s not dark
The trees do affect phone, electric and wifi signals so no mobile phone signal in the house or tv from a dish or aerial, finally fibre optic cables are being laid and there’s been some major tree felling to clear away from electric power lines
