Morning Old Folks. Sitting here with my coffee Going to get it together teach the 9 how to drink from nipples they bury the water in shavings

I set the water up on a small plastic storage container (one for sandwiches) and it keeps the shavings problem down to a minimum.

Same here @CLSranch. I've already talked to the dept of conservation here. Three years ago we had a female fox who decimated area flocks to feed her kits which she had stored under a neighbor's hunting cabin. He knew she was there but could never catch her outside to get rid of the problem. He said there were piles of chicken bones under his porch once she had vacated. Our neighbor to the east lost their entire flock to her. They kept free ranging, did all I could do to warn them but they paid the price for not listening to an older head. We found guinea feathers and white chicken feathers near our pond where she was stopping to clean up her kills before taking them to the kits.

Conservation officer said that she was definitely a threat to livestock and like it or not, chickens are live stock so we had the right to use extreme prejudice towards her.

I found more fur this morning. DH said it was cat fur so we know the foxes are a threat. Not only to small domestic animals but if they get the chance, our chickens. There for we can be extreme with them. He mentioned getting somebody in to trap them or we could but it is almost impossible he said to trap one in a live trap. His quote "they don't call them foxes for nothing. They will out fox you any chance they get".

I was planning to free range some of my rooster bachelors this summer. Sigh. Maybe next year.

We are having record high temps for April. It was 88F here yesterday

Well, he took a look at it, and we found another wall. The wood is so sturdy and nice that we hated to waste it, so I told him that nobody says a coop has to be rectangular. It will probably be 5 or 6 sided, and we found a nice spot close to the house between two large trees to set it up. Now if he gives me a reasonable estimate and can fit it into his schedule, the chickens will have a big walk-in coop. Walk in would be a big plus, IMO. It has been sitting out in a field since who knows when without seeing any love.

It will be nice to have chickens in it!

It would be fine if it lasted a month ... but yeah...9 months of winter is crazy.
