We never get snow but it is normally cool enough to kill off the bugs. It might be that the yellow jackets you have there are more adapted to the cold?Interesting. We had a 'hard' winter here last year. Below zero night temps, snow, ice, single digit highs, the works. Ticks were horrible and yellow jackets are horrible.
Sometimes I wonder if ice and snow don't 'insulate' the ground so insects survive the weather.
silkies have black skin and 5 toes! ayam cemeni are bad at laying eggs and they are small and white according to the stats on them-- something like 70 eggs a year.Ya know, I'm still figuring this chicken stuff out. 4 hens I got last year are supposed to be Black Astrolorp x Black Silkie with a mystery bird mixed in. I lean towards Ayam Cemani or Swort Hona. So they've all got black skin and 5 toes and have been great layers of incredible eggs. They've had a Cockoo marans son for a hubby and Barred Rock hubby since they were in two separate groups. Each roo having his own wives. Their daughters all have barring and are small like their mommas. Those daughters are now producing cute little bantams from K.E. They are early layers, consistent layers, and just a bunch of chuckles.
My other cross (the first year) was a Cockoo Marans with a Black Sex Link hen, which has produced me some awesome pullets. Hearty, laying well, and much larger than their mother.
I guess the whole point of this is... Is it truly that important that you have a specific breed if you aren't breeding for show? I love those offspring that I've raised up as much if not more than store bought chicks. Mainly because they are bigger and stronger, good egg layers and I know who mom and pop are.
recipe please? drooling already.Well have a cake in the oven called Jewish apple cake made in bundt pan .. Had to do a little looking to find ours.
What about Svort Hona? This is one of the gals I bought.silkies have black skin and 5 toes! ayam cemeni are bad at laying eggs and they are small and white according to the stats on them-- something like 70 eggs a year.
I believe you, from all the alternative media sites, it's an inundation! As a general rule, I don't get a lot of phone calls. Today, I had an appointment to get my hair cut. My phone blew up. I finally turned it off, until I got done, and went outside. Sheesh!
For those of you thinking there are not a lot of kids coming across the border without their parents, think again. It's tragic. A little firsthand experience.
I love the birds I got, but I thought I was getting Blue Australorps. I had thought of maybe getting a blue roo too, eventually, and having my own Blue flock. Just for fun. And eggs.I guess the whole point of this is... Is it truly that important that you have a specific breed if you aren't breeding for show?
I see another 5 lbs added to my waistline in the very near future! Was not my recipe to start but here you are
Jewish Apple Cake Recipe
Ingredients
5 tablespoons sugar mixed with 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon for apples
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
¼ cup orange or pineapple juice
2 ½ teaspoons vanilla
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3-4 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/2″ slices
Directions
Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease and flour a 10″ tube or 12 cup Bundt pan.
In a mixing bowl, combine the cinnamon and sugar and add apple slices. Toss to coat. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt, then add sugar, oil, eggs, juice, and vanilla and beat until smooth. Batter will be very stiff.
Spoon a third of the batter into the bottom of the pan. The batter will be thick so once you spoon it in, give it a slight “shimmy” to create an even layer. Arrange half the sliced apples on top, then add another third of the batter, the remaining apples, and top with the last third of the batter. Use your best rubber spatula to get all the good batter from the bowl so none goes to waste! Apples won’t be completely covered.
Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Cool in the pan for 20 minutes before inverting onto a serving platter. Then let it cool completely.
Are what you have turning out to be blue or some other color?I love the birds I got, but I thought I was getting Blue Australorps. I had thought of maybe getting a blue roo too, eventually, and having my own Blue flock. Just for fun. And eggs.
It's ok; but all in all, I was expecting more from a breeder.
