The Old Folks Home

There are 5 houses on our road. We're on one end. The couple on the other end have had shots, and so have we. The 3 houses in the middle did not.

So far, DH and I are the only ones who have NOT gotten Covid. Some have had mild, some not so mild symptoms, but no one ended up in the hospital.

I'm wondering if we've just been really lucky, or were asymptomatic. Or maybe our immune systems, along with the vaccine, fought it off...?

Overdid yardwork on Friday and spent the rest of the weekend recuperating. Planted my tomatoes, and then an apple limb snagged me as I was mowing and it almost pulled me off the tractor. Got done making all the lawns pretty before the monsoon rains set in. New Mexico definitely needs the moisture to combat our drought and help with fire suppression, but it's a double-edged sword as now we've got flood advisories popping up due to the burn scars. My knees definitely do not enjoy the added humidity from three days of rain and have locked up...that and back spasms from the tractor yank had me horizontal most of the weekend. Oh, well. When the body says "rest," it is best to heed. DH cooked dinner the last two nights: Fish sticks & tater tots, baked potato topped w/chili. Any port in a storm and I am grateful.

Spent yesterday afternoon watching old movies: "Top Gun" and "To Kill a Mockingbird"
The first came off more cheesy than I remembered and came to the realization that Val Kilmer's character Iceman -- although an arrogant antagonist -- was dead-on right. The latter film is a classic that imparts more with every viewing. Really enjoyed the courtroom drama, perhaps because I'm getting more removed from that venue in retirement. Hooted at William Windom's leg draped on the table and general lackadaisical Prosecutor's manner. Oh, my!

My theory is, it doesn't really matter which predator it is. It just means you need to beef up security.
That is exactly what I did. Roosters are residing in a pen. No more free ranging. Sad as they really enjoyed it.

Pepper and Jack Daniels, both Fayoumi crosses and very pretty roos would be up at the coop flirting with the girls through the fence and hear the shop door open. They would come galloping down to see what treat we had for them.

I nicknamed them The Committee as they would walk with me back up to the coop just chattering their heads off like they were giving me a report. Even my husband said it was a shame to lock them back up as they really enjoyed being 'yard birds'. But I couldn't afford to lose any more roosters. These are crosses that I would like to eventually breed to produce 'meatier' dual purpose birds with a heightened resistance to MD.

I've had my trap set for three nights. No catches so I can only assume that it was the stray cat that did the kill. And yes, securing the loft is a challenge next to impossible which is why I locked them back up. They had multiple roosting areas that were safe. I can only assume that the one that was killed was roosting somewhere other than the roost bars that I put up and was jumped at night.

Why do people dump their problems on folks who don't want to deal with it? They rid themselves of an unwanted pet and that pet killed at least one rooster. There were three victims there. The cat, the rooster and us.
