The Old Folks Home

I remember the evenings when Mom would get a phone call. Outside lights would be turned off. Station wagon would appear and back into the drive. Mom would hand Dad a sheet. Something would be shrouded and taken down the cellar steps. We would eat venison the next night. :lau
I think I got 2 hazelnuts from my trees. The squirrels got the nuts, the Japanese Beetles killed the trees.
:rant

These as definitely Pan sized squirrels. We used to joke about our local venison tasting so good because they eat so many roses. The squirrels have eaten all the cherries and are now working on hazelnuts. Another few weeks and they will be running around carrying walnuts. If one wanted to eat squirrels I think these would be tasty! :gig

My chickens love Japanese beetles. I use a Bag-a-Bug Japanese beetle trap. I set it up according to directions but cut the bottom out of the bag and hang it over a container (mine is the bottom off a “small pet“ cage) with water filled about half-way up. The beetles drop from the open ended bag into the water but can’t fly out. They swim around until the chickens find them. It is located just outside the coop in their free-range area. Beetle buffet for the chickens.
I have used the lure holder and bag for multiple years. I get a new replacement lure each year. Dump the water once a week and refill.
I have hazelnut bushes from an Arbor Day order 12 years ago. The squirrels discovered them the second year they bore nuts. So much easier for them to chew open than the shagbark hickory nuts. The beetles don’t damage them enough to prevent them from setting nuts. The trap is set up about 100 ft from the bushes and the neighbors have linden trees that the beetles seem to prefer over hazelnut leaves. The trees are about 30 ft from the bushes.
We did not have any Japanese beetles when we moved here 21 years ago. They showed up in 2009 and seem to have tapered off a bit from their most populous around 2012…all anecdotal.
Below is my set-up…empty since the chickens have gone to roost and beetles are not active this time of evening.
Wow, this is long….have a great night OFs!

I see you lurking there!

Okay, lets start a discussion. I have 45 or so chickens and three guineas. I want everything else I see, goats, geese, llamas, donkeys. I am conflicted between my love of my animals and the concessions my family has to make for me to have them. There is the time I must devote to them, the money I spend that could be put elsewhere and the emotional attachment I develope. Is there anyone else who worries that they are not being fair to the rest of the clan?
Nope I need my chickens to be able to deal with humans. I feel no guilt. It is a safety issue.☺
