The Old Folks Home

Morning guys. Yeah, I hear ya about the time change. They keep saying oh, we need to stop doing this, then somebody points out to the powers that be that if they choose the 'wrong' mode to keep the time that the northern tier states will have school kids going to school and coming home in the dark. Not a safe world out there anymore under the best of conditions so they put everything on hold.

How hard is it to figure this out anyway?

I was on Twitter this morning and found this. Sent a chill up my spine and wanted to pass it on to all the ladies out there. Guys too, tell the women you love about this especially the teen who tend to trust everyone. It might save their lives.

PSA for the ladies Twice within the last month, I’ve been approached at two different gas stations by two different men who have walked up to me, credit card in hand, and asked if I could come over toward their car and help them figure out how to use their credit card at the gas pump. Not once did they ask for money, they asked me to follow them. In fact, the first one I briefly informed he had to leave his card in the machine until it told him to remove and he persisted, asking me to walk over and physically show him. Both times I obviously declined and left ASAP, but this has never happened to me before. Now it’s happened twice in a month under totally different circumstances??What adult owns a car but doesn’t know how to use a credit card at a gas pump?? I spoke with my friend, who confirmed human trafficking is happening at gas stations at an accelerated rate, along with other crimes against women. Ladies, PLEASE be vigilant, watch your six, & always be aware of your surroundings!

We are fortunate living near this small town and have small stations without a lot of pumps. One thing I and my wife do is to pick a pump in eyesight of the cashier in side even though we are using a card at the pump. Our card was hacked twice at a gas station pump when someone altered the pos chip in the pump to capture name and card numbers. I don't think that is as easy to do as it was in the early days of pay at the pump but it's less likely to happen to a pump the cashier can see.

After a half week of arctic nights, we're having nearly a week of 70-75 degree days, which is definitely warm for this time of year. But I will take advantage of getting a couple more waterings onto the lawn and orchard while the sun shines. Sadly, my outdoor potted coleus -- so pretty and colorful during the summer -- is now resembling seaweed both in color and stature. Luckily I snipped a few branches to propagate.

Alas. At the first hint of cold my chickens (fussy French Marans) all closed up shop. I am fortunate indeed if I get an egg a day, maybe a second if they've been plied with goodies. Such entitled slackers....

Here's one for your "Learn something new every day" file...
Gophers infiltrated our yard. We dug into one of the mounds, found the tunnel, and did our best "Rambo with a stick of dynamite impression" as we stuffed the lit sticks of gopher gas down there. We thought we had eliminated the problem, but several days to nearly a week or so later I ventured out to mow and there was massive mounding across our orchard.
So I called the Gopher Guys out as I had no idea how many or how to stop them. They had gone all the way from the property line across the orchard and under the fence into the veggie compound. The crew came and set traps and the next week when they came out the culprit was just one HUGE pocket gopher.
Here's where it gets interesting.... It's gopher mating season. Female gophers tunnel and their chain of mounds are circular as they create their tunnels and nesting dens. Male gophers tunnel in pretty much a straight line hoping to intersect with a female's tunnels. Apparently we had killed the female gopher with the gas and the Romeo male gopher -- hoping for a rendez-vous -- just kept tunneling along looking for her.
One single gopher, btw, can move a ton of dirt. I believe it because the mounds in the orchard were quite large and if you connected the dots it looked like a bus line map. My friend Bobbie has a vineyard and the crew had trapped 72 gophers! (Her grape crop was reduced by half due to the damage, which was sad because her last full vintage won all sorts of gold medals and, well, not much profit in a pithy crop.)
Anyway, we truly hope it is a one and done. We have a 30-day guarantee that the crew will come back out if any other mounds appear.
