The Old Folks Home

I
I got some much needed rest off an on during the day.
Had an evening nap while the guys were watching something boring. So I was up very late last night. Worked on the snow princess some more.

Howdy folks.

Busy week for most of us. Just DH and myself this year. Older I get the better I like it that way. No travel stress no company stress, no family stress just our family of two and the critters. Doing turkey for me and roast beef for him along with pumpkin custard and all the fixings. And relax and count our blessings.

@LaurenRitz, no, no intermittent fasting but I spent the past year and a half dropping weight so I didn't have to go on cholesterol meds. The problem with intermittent fasting is that you stand the risk of going back to old eating habits that drove your weight up in the first place. Or not recognizing unhealthy eating habits. Best advice I can give you is to talk to your doc about weight loss and diet modification. Learn about good carbs verses bad carbs and the biggest help I found was adhering to portion size. As a society we have gotten away from recommended serving sizes and succumbed to super sizing everything.

And Veggies. Lots and lots of Veggies!

The big key is learning to eat different, eating healthy, and sticking to it.

Anybody done intermittent fasting? I already don't eat between 7 pm and 8 am, so extending it to 16 hours shouldn't be much of a stretch.
I could do it IF I lived alone. DH expects that we will eat most meals together, and he's not gonna adhere to 16 hours "off."

Amen to that!

Will that be at age 62?
Yup! About 10 years ago, I asked our "financial guy" whether I should take SS as soon as possible, or wait for the maximum amount. He said he wouldn't tell me what I should do, but he did say that they have pushed back the eligibility age, but they have never taken benefits away from someone, once they are getting them.

He's still our "financial guy," so when we had our last meeting, I told him I was going to sign up for benefits as soon as I was able, ie, next February. He smiled, and said that's what he had done too.

I haven't been to a doctor in 30 years, and I hope to go another 30. Minimum.

My focus here is not weight loss, but getting rid of bad food habits which I already recognize, and which could easily become a handicap as I age.

It really doesn't matter what changes you make in your life, if they don't become lifestyle changes you will always revert to old habits.

That makes sense!

I will take SS when I retire, either at 65 or 66. My full retirement age is 67 and I would not wait until 70 for the maximum.

Yep I agree.

I did weight watchers once. Learned real fast about serving portions and recognized that I didn't need a plate full of food in order to be satisfied.

Then two years ago when I had bleeds from severe colitis and gastritis I got a taste of cold harsh reality concerning my diet and eating habits. My diet now is basically an anti inflammation diet. Poultry and veggies. Occasional potatoes, no sweets, breads etc. I hate it but hate bleeding into my gut more so I adhere to my diet.
Definitely feeling "officially" older today. I made my Social Security account. Next March, I start getting SS.
My husband said he didn't start to 'feel his age' until this past May when we drove down to Macon to get our driver's license renewed. I was still 69 so my license will be good for 6 years. He was turning 72 and they told him he had to come in every three years to renew because he was over 70. Man did he look deflated. Walking out he said, you know, you don't make yourself feel old, other people make you feel that way.

Had to agree with him.

We were in a position to be able to retire when DH reached 59 1/2. We can lessen the amount we withdraw and use the SS to make up the difference.

We planned our retirement thinking we wouldn't get SS. When we first started saving, we said, the way the SSA is going, they'll be too broke to pay benefits by they time we're old enough. Well, here we are, and they're still going.
