The Old Folks Home

I wish we had a safe place to use a wood stove being we have a lifetime supply of good oak wood plus enough pine for kindling when nice and dry. My job used to be to carry wood in at night and my little brother would go out and stack it in my arms so I could carry more at a time and get through sooner. It was usually a lot of small oak and then a few large round pieces to but on top of the bed of glowing coal at bedtime to burn until someone got up the next morning. I sure wish I had that old stove to heat my shop now.
Consider an outdoors wood burning furnace that uses your duct and fan set up to circulate the heat from the furnace to the house.

They are very popular around here.

My next door neighbor just got one. At times it puts out a LOT of smoke, other times, next to nothing. Maybe it's not burning all the time? Don't know. But when it's smoking, it will REALLY matter to us which way the wind is blowing.

I've heard you "only need to stoke them twice a day." If that's so, then they are putting a ton of wood in it each time (it's a big contraption). If the wood that is stacked near their driveway is all they have, they will be out by New Years, based on how they're going through it now. They've had it going for about 3 days.

We looked at getting one about 25 years ago and decided on a woodstove in the living room instead.

Our EPA stove only puts out smoke when you first start the fire. Maybe something about the chimney pipes getting hot or something? Not sure about that but once it gets going, no smoke.

I've noticed smoke coming out of the outside wood furnaces in the area but not to any great extent. Wonder if your neighbor is burning uncured wood. Now that stuff will smoke!

When we walked by, we could see the heat waves coming off the chimney, but no smoke. This makes me hopeful that there won't be a lot of smoke, most of the time. :fl

I was tired today. I don't know if it had anything to do with our foul weather, or what, but I did a lot of resting today. I'll get cranking tomorrow.
Our turn for foul weather in the morning. We are supposed to be greeted by a thunderstorm by 7am. I may be resting the day after getting some feed for the chickens and a bottle of vitamin E for a hen that is on the mend but it should speed her recovery up.
