The Old Folks Home

A friend back in IL once told me that a person retires so they can keep all their doctor's appointments.

Laughed at the time but now it's not so funny.

@TLAY1946 Don't feel bad, I had a loaf of bread go belly up on me last week. Still don't know what was going on with it unless the oven hadn't cooled down sufficiently from baking cookies. It came out dense and raw in the middle. No way we could eat it so the birds got it. Chickens are very appreciative of culinary failures. No criticism no condemnation, they just dive in and make those mistakes disappear.

And for that I am truly grateful.

The coop that came with the house is mostly sheet metal, and it's rusting below the surface. I've had several predators get in, and lots of mice.

I did two sections of repair today, where it was easy for animals to dig in under the metal walls. This was where the rust was the worst. Whenever it rains the water pools in that area, so the water catchment gutters should solve part of the problem.

I dragooned the LDS missionaries to help, since they always need opportunities for service.
Dig a trench at the bottom of the walls\run and bury a treated 2x4 or 4x4. Attach 1inch square welded wire to the board and use 2 or so foot high sections attached to the walls\run wires.

I have my run setup that way.

Remember me saying I was baking cookies? I started with Christmas trees. They looked great, but were hard as rocks. I have a new King Arthur Flour pan, and it's thick. I thought it might be that it was so thick, and heavy that it might not be heating up well, in the short time it takes to bake cookies. I played with temps. Nope. I ordered the cheap Wilton pans, since that's what I've used before. Nope. Still rock hard. I used up all the flour in the canister, and poured a new bag in it. Yesterday, I decided to give it one more try. They came out perfect.

Come to find out, Dd #1 had put the previous flour in the canister. She put All Purpose flour in it, instead of Self-Rising. Sheesh! 200 bad cookies, all because she put in the wrong flour. Had I known, I have the baking powder, and could have resolved the problem, but I DIDN'T know. That never dawned on me. I spent yesterday, and today baking cookies. Tomorrow morning, I'll make up the flow icing, and start getting them decorated. Decorating them is the time consuming part.
Self rising flour is more of a Southern ingredient. It is not readily available here.

I read an article that said adding a tablespoon of sour cream to sugar cookies will make them softer.

The bread did not rise correctly.

I have that happen sometimes with sourdough.

Just wait until you hit 60!
Knocking on wood. I'm 63 and so far, so good. I retired from the stressful job at 56 though which I think helped my future health immensely. I still work, just from home, and with very little or no stress. Stress is horrible on your body, I know that personally!

The run is now surrounded by 1/2 inch hardware cloth on two sides, buried a foot down and 2 feet up. I still need to sew the hardware cloth to the existing wire at the top.

Since the metal sheeting is screwed to a wood frame, the hardware cloth along the metal walls is screwed to the frame at the base and then buried.

I've taken care of the worst sections, where the metal was completely or mostly rusted away. The rest will be done piecemiel.
