The Old Folks Home

I'm a bit concerned about Dh. He started on Mounjaro for weight loss. Today I began looking it up. From what I've read, I'm unsure whether he falls into the normal reaction category, or if it's more severe. It's normal to experience stomach discomfort after eating. Yeah, his stomach hurts really bad if he eats, or drinks anything, and he gets very nauseated. No actual vomiting, but it was a close call. I don't translate stomach discomfort as flat out pain. Nausea, and some diarrhea tend to be normal. He's got diarrhea to the point it's water. He's going back to his doctor on Thurs. I wanted him to go today, but he insists he'll wait until Thurs.

Dummy me, when I was reading about the ingredients, I knew it was originally used to treat diabetes. When they approved it for weight loss, no diabetes involved, I figured it was a reduced dose from what they would prescribe for diabetics, since the goal is the benefit from decreased appetite. Nope, they prescribe the full dose, just like they would for a diabetic. That seems WRONG to me for so many reasons, and on so many levels.

He's suffering far more from this, than if he had chosen to simply reduce his intake, and go through the initial hunger pains, while his stomach was shrinking. In other words, the first couple weeks of dieting, SUCK. After the first two weeks, it's not so difficult, and gets so much easier.

I'm concerned that he may get dehydrated which can cause more severe problems. If he gets confused, irritable, has rapid breathing or rapid heartbeat, is dizzy or has a headache take him to the doctor. Dehydration can cause heart and kidney problems.

He is drinking water. It's about the only thing he can consume that doesn't cause his stomach to hurt.

I have read that the body will adjust to the new weight loss drugs.

Does insurance cover it for him?
In most instances the body does adjust, so we shall see. Yes, our insurance pays all but the co-pays for the medicine, and weekly doctor visits. Even so, it adds up to a good little chunk of change.
