Good morning Old Folks think I would love to go back to a well system.
We are in small town in the 60's they made everyone hook up to a new city owned

Hard to say but one might think so.
They charge more to dump than what we use.
No state tax have to get it some way right?

We've got it good here having a well, although had to change the pump last year to the tune of several hundred. Someday we'll have to redrill a new one, but probably not for 5 years or so.

We bought a shallow well pump so now pump water in the summer for our garden and orchard from the creek that's down the hill behind our place. That'll help save the house well some wear and tear as we're trying to make it last longer. That'll be a minimum of 10K to drill a new well.

Our well is original to the house, so 40+ years old. We've replaced the pump twice. I was told that their life expectancy is roughly 15 years, and the first replacement lasted closer to 20. We're about 7-8 years into the second one.

Ours is nearly the same age, and when we bought it 8 years ago and had the well inspected, we and the sellers split the cost of replacing it. Then, had to replace it last year, so it was 7 years was all. It's a sandpoint so not sure if that's part of why.

A sandpoint is a 3-5' piece of pipe that is a filter that keeps sand from being pumped up by the pump itself. Normally a pipe is driven down do the aquifer and air used to blow out the material that fills it. Then a point is added and it gets driven into the aquifer for the final stage in making the well.

Thank you for answering that as I just saw Sally's question and went . All I know is that's what it's called, and if/when we need a new well, I forget what they call that one but it's not a sandpoint.

Not sure what that filter is so we must not have one. Our water is just tasteless. We have soft water in the bathroom for the laundry, parrots, and chick's water, but it's hard water everywhere else. It's just on the lower end of hard water.
