I was going to focus on eliminating Canada Thistle and morning glory this year, but it looks like other weeds will take precedence. Specifically weeds that have thorns which require heavy gloves.

Getting rid of weeds is a chore!

Soil has a lot of dormant seeds that will sprout if the soil is disturbed.

Great chore weather here for the next few days…50 at night and low 70s during the day!

What is your protocol for hot weather? I need to come up with something better than what I'm doing now.

I have a misting system set on a timer
A vent fan that comes on when the outside temp hits 85F
A patio umbrella shade to keep the coop cool

I also make sure they have plenty of water. I do check on them when it gets over 105F real them and cool them down if they pant too much.

They did fine last summer.

In a sense. I used cardboard under woodchips for the first garden area, but this one is my dry garden. It's quite large, solarizing the whole thing would be cost prohibitive, even in sections.

'Al' cook it well. There was just an article on Yahoo about a family that got Trichinosis from eating under cooked bear meat.

oh yeah, bear and lynx both. Alaska fish and game hands out an excellent hunting pamphlet that goes over all known diseases in the various wildlife, and how to avoid them.

Wow, you have a lot going on! Maybe installing electric fence would be a good plan. I am sure there are other bears out there!

Sadly, bears are super insulated... so each individual bear has to be trained to respect electric fence... you have to bait the fence.... it is a process.

Also... bears can learn to just climb over it... since it only hurts if they put their nose or tongue on the wire.

Thanks for the info! Our coops are to big for the umbrella to work but we do provide shade and lots of water. Our chickens free range during the day and have places they like to go to cool off.

The misting system is the biggest help. I have the orbit arizona misting system. It is expandable.
