The Old Folks Home

Agree with you about olive oil, there is nothing better than fresh baked, piping hot fresh bread or crispy, crunchy rolls dipped in EVOO. We buy our EVOO in 3 liter cans, it is first press and from Italy. Cost about $19, depending. Considering you can pay that much for a small bottle, it's a great deal. Can get it at our regular grocery (usually on the bottom shelf FYI) or the co-op, and they have quite a few brands. Just be careful that you pick out the EV and not plain old OO. Lasts for months, we just keep in a cool, dark cabinet and pour some into a ketchup type bottle for daily use. Saves boo-koo $$$ too. Adding some spices or seasonings to your dipping oil is good as well, you can do that ahead and keep it in a little carafe or any sealed jar, the longer it sits, the better it gets. Have fun experimenting! And yes indeed, those Amish butter rolls are soooooo good, sure we could make it ourselves if we were so inclined. Used to get it at our co-op for about $6, but over the past months, the price has gone up and up and up to where we can't afford it, well over $12 now. Oh well, will have to get out the churner...

Hush Puppies are usually served with fish. When I first read the recipe, I thought it would be too much onion, but it really isn't. Some hush puppy recipes don't contain flour and can turn out very hard.

I love fresh-baked sour dough bread with olive oil and garlic. I don't keep starter in the house any more because I was eating too much bread, rolls, etc.

Fresh baked sourdough---ummmmm. . . I stopped eating bread and butter a few years ago; stopped making bread all together, because I would eat it all up. Nothing like fresh bread with real butter.

These days, I use a lot of OO. usually for breakfast with eggs, feta, thyme and OO. I do like the EVOO on certain foods--has taken a while to get used to the flavor. If it is of Italian-based cooking I can fit the OO in easily.

How about making a smaller loaf and freezing them? I know, fresh bread is a luxury, so is pizza crust, all that. Don't want to get started.
But I'll tell ya, just got some apples in and going to make applesauce and pie filling. Blackberries were crummy this year and I'll miss them this winter.

Oh, I don't mind the onion! Now that makes sense about the flour! I tried making them, but just weren't that soft crunch, but too hard, and thick in the middle. I have to try this!! Thanks again, I think I've gotten three different recipes from you guys now. :)

I just made homemade pizza for my kids, and yes I ate 2 slices.

Pizza dough

2 cups white flour
1 cup bran
2 tsp yeast
approx 1.5 cups warm water

Knead, sprinkle carnmeal on pizza pan, place dough on corn meal, press a dent and put on oo then press out dough. Cover with yummy stuff. Let rise 20 min Bake 400 for 15-20 minutes.

I tried growing blackberries, the cultivated kinds, 2-3 times, they all die. THe wild ones grow like crazy so I let them grow in some areas and pick those. Who know why one works and not the other.

I love the berries--low carb.

I think the drought caught us at the wrong time for the berries...darn. I've got too many wild ones to buy plants. But I did buy apples. Laugh at this...I told mil to bring 2 bushels of cooking apples since she was getting some anyway. She arrived with 4 bushels, then sitting on the poarch starting doing something...I didn't pay attention. Then she told me she divided them all up and gave everyone a mix of cooking and eating. Oh. The light went on, gee, I thought to myself, I bet she put all the best in her own box...sure enough. Later I checked..all the tiny, damaged ones were in my box. I told my son in law, he checked his...same thing. Early in the am, I swapped a few and put them in the bottom of her box so when she gets to them, she'll wonder if she took the wrong box. Haha. I also traded for the really green ones to sil, and gave him all the red delicious, they are for the kids lunches and snacks, and i know they don,t like the green ones. Can you believe her? We do. I only got one box after all...so I told her my husband won't be getting his favorite deserts very often...her face crashed....what did she think, I'm eating them all myself....no...it's for her son for crying out loud. Way to spite yourself. Next year I'll go myself or have a friend bring some, not rely on her for sure. Sometimes I have to wonder.

Wow, your mil? That's just not the kind of mil I was used to. She just passed away last year. What a sweet woman.

I think you handled that just right. No cussing anyone out, but you made a great point, that she hadn't thought about! Sorry you had to deal with that..hope it doesn't happen often!

Yeah, it's a shame, why do people feel the need to be petty and spitful...don't get it. I am so glad hubby is aware of it and doesn't fall for the manipulations. She had quite a bit of interference in her other sons life. one time she started gossip about them and i just said, well look, they had six kids, and stayed together, that tells me all I need to know. Anything else they can tell me themselves. I know gossip can be fun, but it kills three so...I just wish I understood better. Maybe I don't need to understand just avoid it whenever I can!
