The Olive-Egger thread!

Ok, that explains a lot. So if I could get my hands on an Ameraucana rooster or hatch one of my own, I could get a lot of different colors. I'm trying to fortify a breeding program for specific breeds but this puts a whole new spin on it, if I wanted specific colors of eggs. Is there a market for extraordinary colored eggs? Just curious. The really dark brown ones are incredible. My brain is already working over time. Does this work with banty eggs too? I'm really glad my polish lay just white. I wish I knew what duck laid what egg because practically all of those are white. Thank you for the helpful information, and other people think they are just chickens.

I have a brand new 2 week old Olive Egger chick from eggs halo sent me. Here "she" is, Wheaten Marans over EE.

Hi all,

Here are some pictures of my week and a half old Olive Eggers. They are from eggs I got from Alicefelldown. Very cute and very lively chicks. These are just a few. (apparently I not a great chick photographer! I will have to try again!) Most of them are gray and black. One has some white on her wing. Really cute chicks!

And a good question, Can these chicks be feather sexed? Because I have done this before with other breeds, and I have had very good luck. The tell tail sign is the tail.

By one week the hens have tail feathers and the roos don't. These chicks look like they are doing the same thing. Some have little tails and some don't. I banded the ones I think are hens. We shall see.....

Thanks!

There are a couple more that are mostly gray and just some black at the tip of the wings! I can't wait to see how they grow up! I will get more pictures.....

Some Eye Candy from a hatch 4 days ago... Eggs from 'HappyMt'. Thanks Amy!

(f2) Wellie x OEs - These are supposed to sex like Wellies. I have at least 2 pullets, maybe all three. Not sure about the one on the left. Head pattern is a bit weird.

@Maggizzle - this is from a post from March 2nd on the Ameraucana thread about egg genetics:

So, blue x white = pale blue...maybe?

She confirms that blue x white DOES make a pale blue.

My egg customers prefer a rainbow of eggs in their cartons and most folks who raise chickens like a variety of colors - I know I do!

My only laying OE lays such a pale olive green that I'm really glad I hatched some black copper Marans from chocolate eggs. Hopefully one is a mighty roo who can improve the egg color in her offspring!
