The Olive-Egger thread!

A Golden Cuckoo roo would give you some Olive Eggers when crossed with your EE's. They would not be sex linked however.

You need to cross a non barred (ie, non cuckoo) roo to a barred/cuckoo hen for it sex linkage to work.

Thank you for posting! Well, I think I need to re-read... I totally got the sex link part backwards... wishful reading I guess!

Sex linkage is convenient if you're prepared to cull at hatch, but figuring out "who's who" can be pretty fun too. I bet a Golden Cuckoo roo over some various EE hens would make some cool looking birds!

Don't know if I'd be up to culling at hatch anywho

... I'm still pretty new and a real sucker for the little poof ball chickies.
I completely agree and think I'd get some fun egg colors and cool chicks out of this mix... oh, I can't wait to tell my little boy about this great idea when he gets home from school!
Since sex linkage is out... maybe I'll get a Black Copper Marans Roo... choices choices!

You'll be in the same situation I'm gonna be in soon...when the "OE" eggs hatch, you want to keep everybody with a pea comb and then it's gonna take quite a while to spot the roos.

I'll just dump my culls on craigslist. "Cull" doesn't have to mean to kill them...it's just removing them from your program.

So youz guyz, how long does it take for and EE/OE roo to show its roosterness? Like 10 or 12 weeks? Maybe 14?

This is an awesome thread. I am learning so much. Love seeing everyone's olive egger babies. I am gonna use one of my blue ameraucanas over one of my blue marans babies hopefully late this summer, when they get old enough to start my olive eggers. I can't wait

my last batch of EE mixes, they all had pea combs.. i could spot the girls from the boys at 3 weeks..the boys combs started to get taller while the girls stayed flat against their heads...

For those of us who are new to this,,,,,,well I feel as if I not only need to read the entire thread yet again and to also make notes.

Okay, I have a genetics question now...since I'm gonna be hatching second-generation OE's (BCM roo x Ameraucana hens, then BCM roo x OE hens), and I'm also hatching pure BCMs at the same time...I wonder what the chances are that I'll get a Black Copper, single comb bird that looks like a BCM in phenotype, but isn't. Maybe the legs would be green, or it'd have muffs or something else to tell me it's a mutt?
