The Olive-Egger thread!

Ok I have come to the point that my mystery chick I got back in June is a Roo. My guess is that he is a golden lace wyandotte. My question is if I put him in with my EE hens will their offspring give me olive eggs? I will post a pic of him after this thunderstorm passes if you want.
You will get a very lovely green--mine are a very pale olive. Very pretty. Makes egg collecting interesting.

I mistakenly though the blue EE genes over ruled the brown eggs shell. SO I incubated a lot of eggs under a broody. I'm glad I did because I like the color of the eggs, and I have several olive egger hens too. THe eggs look pretty next to each other, highlighting the difference between them.

Ok so i am in the process of collecting the hens and roo's for my olive egger project. So far i have a Blue copper maran hen a black copper maran hen (I think) and 2 Ameraucana 1 blue and one black. I will be getting more ameraucana girls and a BCM roo in a week or so. So excited now i know my eggs are time away right now but i am finding this tread for informative so i am subing to learn more.

Hello All. I have a simple (but not to me) question that I need to ask the experts. I've done some research and can't find the answer. I have 1 lone survivor from a damaged shipment of eggs. A Splash Marans Cockerel( his egg was not dark at all). He is in with 2 Black Copper Marans Pullets and 1 Olive Egger pullet (she's looking wheatenish) and she came from a blue egg. What resulting offspring should I expect from her? They are very young, far from breeding, but I'm very curious. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Do you all think i should get a cuckoo maran roo as well? i read on here that if you breed one of them to the ameraucana you can get sex links is that correct?
You need a cuckoo HEN not a roo to make sex links. Barred hens can only pass the barring genes to roos and they will have a spot on their head at hatch.

BTW: Most Cuckoo do not lay a dark egg and might not make very good Olive Eggers.

If you want good dark olives, you do need to use a black copper maran ( or blue copper) on a blue egger. YOuwill get a lighter green if you use a cuckoo for the chocolate. Still pretty though. I do use my other roosters, RIR types, and have nice green eggs.

Ok so i have pure ameraucana hens and i tried to get BCM roo's but i think i ended up with 1-blue and 1-black hen! Then i read on here about the sex links soooo I guess i need to get a BCM roo which i can get i have a local breeder that has some. I do have a couple or barred rock hens too would they work for anything. So how can i get the olive egger sex links???? So confused lol

Has anyone noticed a difference in plumage with their BCM over EE plumage. I have 3 groups of my eggs and 2 I hatched from Wynette's first generation Olive Eggers. Wynette's eggs hatched black chicks as they grow the boy was black with gold flecking (I don't know if that is the right wording but that's what said when I first noticed it) on hackles and tail and girl is black their faces, however are nice charcoal color. I want to get a picture of them, but they are flighty and when get closer they walk away, the only time I had the chance to get a good picture and had camera in had aimed, then the darn battery died

Away I have my 3 groups, first group are all EE appearance, in the second group, I got some with the same gold flecking on the boys and black girls with the dark faces. The EE type do not have the dark faces. The third group the same accept I got 2 blue's they don't have the dark faces. Has anyone else noticed this? It is the type like a Sumatra. I'm having a hard time getting pictures due to they are very flighty, I thought at first it was me not spending a lot of time with them, but I have a Barred Rock and two RIR the same age raised together and they aren't like that. Is that another findings others are finding?
