The Olive-Egger thread!

Ok,... I started sifting through the 430 pages of posts, but OIY!!!

My question: What's the use of an Olive Egger Roo

~I crossed a Maran with an Ameraucana [I know her genetics for deep blue eggs, his sister is with me and lays a 5-6 darkness brown egg)

Problem: One of the offspring is a cockerel (happens to be my FAVORITE as far as feather coloring)

How do the genetics work with OE Roo over an Ameraucana (as in one of my others, not his mother!) ?

I see that some have done 2nd generation OEs, for DARKER olive eggs, but that's a brown laying Roo (like Maran) over a 1st generation OE......

So, does my lil guy have any use to me? I cannot keep him forever, as I am in a residential & no Roos aloud, but I could pen him in with a hen long enough to get a clutch. That's IF that will be of any benefit towards 2nd generation egg coloring.....

I plan to cross my OE roosters over OE hens. THen many different colors can appear. Sound fun??

Technically you can breed him back to his mother, that's a standard mating scheme. YOu can breed him to his sisters. Because he is a cross bred you have little chance of having bad genes show up.

I'd keep him in a heartbeat & "play" with the possibilities. But I have to be careful how I go about adding to my flock though... I am in a neighborhood & only have space for 30 standard birds (as my permit states)...

I'd love to cross him, for his feather coloring, with one of my other Ameraucanas, but what would the hens from that crossing produce as far as egg colors?

I didn't mean to come off as curt, I've been told I tend to sound as such when typing, I LOVE the excitement other flock owners have!! As my friends cannot "get" why I talk to my gals!!!! LOL

I'm just really flustered bc the last accidental Roo I had, their father, within 2mo of him "finding" his crow a member of the neighborhood association was knocking at my door informing me they could hear him..... Most of my close neighbors I give eggs & veggies to for free as my yard has the best sun comparatively & they do not own flocks, so they like my "mini farmstead"

It's also a bite bc I LOVE the feathering on this lil OE!!!! Of 5, 4 were a lighter blue splash then there's him, he is SOOOOOO pretty IMO... Especially when the Metallic Gold with darker Blue started coming in, even though they are roo saddle feathers

I hate waiting for eggs

. I have 8 Olive Eggers growing out that I hatched from only my Blue Am hens and straight combed Olive Egger -very french black copper maran rooster. I hope that he forwards that dark brown egg gene to them all. All of his sisters that were straight combed lay very dark brown eggs.

I figure it couldn't hurt I use him if it works they all "could" lay a great olive color :) He hatched from Alicefelldown eggs.

Then I have a pen of project colors that I am hopng lay olive as well and those girls should lay any day so going to check for eggs I hope each day to see a small gem in there

Oh I am dreading the wait... these home bred ones I have until Dec for them to lay, I have a freebie who should be anytime but her's will be light as she is a Barred Rock x Ameraucana.....

So, do I have this right: Oliver x EE = EE(darker than mom's) or OE(lighter than Aunts')

BUUUUUUT, if I'm going to keep him into maturity enough to collect up hatching eggs, I could also cross him with his father's sister: OE x Maran = ???
