The Olive-Egger thread!

F1 olive egger....

cockerel!

He's from a black copper Marans over an EE that lays huge eggs. I was so hoping for a pullet. I might try him with my older OE hen and see if I can get an OE that lays bigger eggs. Yeah, then there are the odds of getting all sorts of colors with that cross.

This is my first egg from my first chicken ever!!! (EE) I thought she would lay light green eggs from what the breeder told me. Would this be considered an olive egg? The color is a little golden/olive color. I'm soooo excited!!!! I cant wait to check tomorrow!!!

I am new to olive eggers, I purchased some chicks this spring and was hoping someone can tell me anything about the ones I have. how can I tell in the sex? what breeds they came from?

The top picture looks like a boy for sure. The second pic has a really pink comb, but you didn't say how old they are. The second one has a pea comb and it is harder to tell sex because there are no wattles to look at, but could be a boy as well. The last pic looks like a girl to me. It is very hard to tell what they are mixed with. For an OE, you need to breed a blue egg layer with a dark brown egg layer. They are all cute chicks!!

Where did your OE come from? Are they supposed to be pullets? If a hatchery, did they list what breeds they used in the making of their OE's? If they're the same age, I noticed the bird on top (Which I suspect might contain cuckoo marans because of the color) might be a cockerel if the same age as the other because it looks like the comb is bigger and red already. The one on the bottom appears barred so she could also have cuckoo marans, but that one looks like a pullet. Same for the one in the middle, but can't really see the barring on the picture. Not sure what the other half is though.

I'd guess the first one is a cockerel and the other two could be pullets. Your pictures are dark though and it is hard to tell.

Since they are barred, at least one parent had to be barred. They could be from cuckoo Marans or from Legbar lines. I'd guess the cockerel is a Legbar x Marans based on the comb. The pea comb indicates they probably come from Ameraucana or Araucana cross.

Today was hatch day and all 5 of the eggs hatched. Momma buff orpington was a patient girl for being broody for 6 weeks. Got the eggs at the end of week 3 and wasn't sure if she'd stay on them but she did. They are Isbar BCM croses. I left them in the nesting box and will be transferring them to another area separate from the other girls tomorrow. This is my first time letting a hen hatch and raise chicks. One is all black and most are black with some white on the neck and feathers and one that is a lighter color.
