The Olive-Egger thread!

Been disappointed about my first generation Olive egger's egg color. Love how the pullets look and very friendly birds. Their egg color is still nice and dark so I am breeding them back to blue egg rooster.

Anyways my favorite pullet is laying lilac coloreds eggs. She has been laying them everyday pretty much. I am really starting to enjoy my egg colors. I have two of her eggs in the photos. The first one is in natural light.

Question for those here that might know. I know when you cross a Marans x Ameraucana and you have a pullet that comes out with a straight comb instead of a pea comb, they will not have the blue/green egg gene. Is it the same for the boys if they inherit the straight comb? That they will also lose the blue/green egg laying gene? Thanks much!

Typically YES. The Blue Egg gene and Pea Combs USUALLY travel together genetically. Pure breed Ameraucanas SHOULD have 2 Copies of the blue egg gene and the pea comb gene so if you are getting straight combs in the first cross your Ams are the cause.

That has been one of my tests with my Am roos especiall.... if they throw straight combs, they hit the road.

single and pea combs are "Autosomal" genes meaning they are both inherited by males and females the same way. they are not sex linked at all. same with the O(Blue egg gene).. now the chances are 95% that you will not get the blue egg gene on a single comb bird. why? its tightly close to the pea comb genes. that is if you use EE. but if you use Cream legbars, then you just wont know untill the hens start laying.
