The Olive-Egger thread!

So a CL with a Marans is auto sexing ? Does it matter if it's a black, blue or splash Marans?
I thought for the CL to retain auto sexing it had to be bred to a Crele or barred based bird

The Barring needs to be on the pullet\hen and the Rooster needs to be solid. It would not work with a Cuckoo Marans Rooster for example.

Yes both of those breeds get used to make olive eggs. Im not sure if those 2 have been crossed together specifically though.

I have cream legbar and Marans and I plan to cross them eventually

I'll be doing the same! Here's my up and coming Cream Legbars and BCM

I have my OE's on lock down! It's my first incubator trial. So, my hopes are not high. I been fighting with the humidity. The first 18 days it was 47-53% now on lock down it is at 60-62%. I think it is too low, but I have filled all the water trays under it. I hate to open it again just to add a sponge. My fear is they drowned, air sac not big enough ect..

48 eggs baking in cupcake liners. Candling them was about useless. I couldn't see through the dark or thick shells! Theses came from my Americana's,BCM welsummers and OE hens covered by a F1 OE and a blue Americana roo. The 2 boys have been busy but not tested this year.

So I will have a chance of med brown eggs with spots but mostly OE's I just won't breed the brown ones next year.

I only had 5 welsummer & BCM eggs in this batch. But my broody hatched 6 of 12 dark brown eggs over the week end. 5 chipmunks and 1 black chick.

What is the difference between these two terms?

Auto sexing means each generation at hatch can be sexed sexlinked are specific crosses that yield sexable chicks for that specific generation or cross

Yes. That. Basically if you can breed two birds together of the same breed and get more of them (and sex them at hatch) they are auto sexing.

If you breed sex-links together you will *not* get more sex links.

Autosexing birds are specific breeds like CCL, Rhodebars, etc. Sexlink birds are hybrids of two breeds but are not a breed themselves as they don't breed true (like any hybrid doesn't breed true to type).

Aren't cuckoos only sexable based on the SIZE of the headspot? If you reversed that cross and used cuckoo Hens/pullets and Ameraucana rooster, then ONLY the resulting cockerels would have headspots and this be clearly sex-linked instead of having to compare and guess. ;)
