The Olive-Egger thread!

Beautiful eggs, but I agree it is green and not olive.  I think there is some confusion among some "breeders" about what makes an olive egger.  My olive eggers will all be out of Marans hens that lay dark brown eggs...everything else would be considered an Easter Egger.  At this point, however, I'd be happy with either since all I'm getting are brown and more brown.  LOL

Sigh. I have plenty of blue eggs from my CCLBs. Been wanting that roo to cross on my two NC Marens

Oops. Hit wrong key on phone....
AHEM...anyway, my roo doesn't seem to like my BCM...I have set a number of the eggs, but only one pulley has hatched. She'said just a few weeks old.

I hear this from people but I just don't have any aggressive issues with my Marans, blue and black coppers. They are very calm birds.
I have 4 marans (2 coppers, one copper OE and one wheaten). Two of them are very friendly towards people and the other two are not. They are not mean, just don't want to be touched. I think it has something to do with how they were raised. One is so friendly she want to be carried around and will put her head on your shoulder and fall asleep. The 3 older hens are rather pushy. The Wheaten especially picks on the other birds when she is in a mood. When it comes to the rooster they put him in his place. The little OE tolerates him, but he's not interested in her for some reason. LOL

Chickens do have some very interesting personalities. While a lot of it seems to be genetic I agree that how they are raised plays a big part as well. Of the hens that I first hatched myself, one of them flies over the fence to hand on my shoulder for treats/pets etc. Her daughter is also very friendly, the half sister on the other hand is just downright human aggressive and struts up and pecks people to try to hurt them if you try to pet her. She is getting better now though, I have worked on her behavior a lot. The interesting thing to me is that while the one hen is very friendly to humans, she is chicken aggressive and kicks other hens off the roost at night. The human aggressive hen on the other hand is the least chicken aggressive.

Gonna brag a bit here as I am so pumped for my first hatched/raised here birds to be giving me eggs...I wanted BCM and Ameraucanas....can't afford it - the stock and/or the facilities, but I got some nice color anyway!

My Welsummer started out very light :( but darkened up after 3-4 eggs....spray booth tuned up I guess - 12 eggs out of her so far.

My maybe olive egger that I hatched out of a fairly dark brown egg from a friend (we think maybe an amberlink covered by one of 2 EE roos) has been between a nice pretty nice olive but sometimes green - 28 eggs from her so far.

One of the hatchery EE's has given a pretty nice shade of blue - only 4 eggs from her so far, so we'll see how it progresses.

I have one more EE to start laying and a couple light brahmas...but I am really excited to have these girls and a Welsummer rooster to hatch eggs from next late winter/early spring..

Here's my Pullet Palette:

That is a very nice shade of blue. Much more blue than I have seen but then again my birds all only carry 1 blue egg gene so far (all are mixed with high production birds).

It is interesting that Amber links and Red stars often have medium to dark brown eggs despite laying every single day. That is part of the reason why I am using them to eventually get an F2 cross and select for the darkest Olive eggs.
