The Olive-Egger thread!

I lost all my olives to Marek's.  They seem to be a lot less resistant to it than some of the other breeds.  You can vaccinate them at any age.  The issue is that you need to vaccinate them before they have been exposed to the virus.  Experts say it takes three weeks (or longer) to develop immunity after the vaccine is given.  it is recommended that the chicks be vaccinated as young as possible and then isolated for 3 - 6 weeks with no exposure to other chickens or bird dander.  This means you have to wash well and change your clothes when feeding or handling the new birds.  Eliminating all exposure is difficult if not impossible.  I do the best I can and hope they don't get enough exposure to the virus before their immune systems can handle it.

@rich719
   Do you have Marek's in your flock already?  Have your chicks been exposed to the outdoors and your other chickens?
If the answer is yes, it won't do any good to vaccinate.  If the answer is NO to both questions, you can vaccinate and hope the chicks have not been exposed already.  It won't hurt to vaccinate them late, but it won't do any good if they are already carrying the virus.

Best of luck!  There is also a marek's thread you can read as well as a Marek's Vaccine thread.  :)

I have not had mareks problems with my OEs, they are Penedesenca x Cream Legbar. I have new OEs that are Penedesenca x Arakansas Blue egg layers. So far they have been fine with mareks resistance.

@rich719 but do you have or have you had Mareks in your flock to show that the bird you mention truly seem to have resistance?

I do--had a necropsy report that said I had mareks--a hen died of mareks cancer--that all chickens needed to be vaccinated. I ignored that and have not had another die from mareks in 2.5 years.

. This is my new Olive Egger chick. Any guesses what breeds were used to create her?

Interesting looking chick. Not sure what went into the making of it. Maybe aracauna for the blue egg half since I see no tail. I don't see feathers on the legs and can't tell exactly what color the legs are.

Is the chick from a hatchery? The use either americana(EE) or cream legbar for the blue egg shell gene. For the dark brown gene, could have been a Marans and the feathers gene was missing.

Does anyone have a picture of an olive egg produced by a Cream Legbar Roo over a Welsummer mix? Or a picture of the hen produced by that combination? I'm looking for a hen for my Cream Legbar roo that will produce olive eggs. Thanks
