The Olive-Egger thread!

They should. And the hen will pass 1 barring gene onto her male offspring which will give them a white head spot at hatch
Now that's way cool! So, with the exception of color of eggs, if I breed my Splash Marans roo to one of my Bielefelder hens, the chicks will be auto-sexing as well? I love the dark brown eggs of my Marans, but I would very much like to increase the size, even at the cost of a few shades from the desired chocolate colors. But I absolutely love the auto-sexing breeds, so CCLs are next on my list!

They won't be auto sexing, niether will mine. The chicks will be sex links, so they will be sexabke at hatch. If you breed those chicks it won't work on their chicks

Sorry, I guess I misspoke. What I'm interested in is the first cross chicks being auto-sexing. Those chicks I would breed back to either breed depending on the size (or color, given a chick out of the CCL cross) of what I want to improve at that point. We are hobby breeders with no big plans for a huge breeding operation. Just like to know the sex at hatch!

Okay, just reread your post and now I think I understand - I'm confusing auto-sexing with sex-linked! So the chicks will only be sex-linked, not auto-sexing, right?

We are too, just working on having an awesome backyard flock:) Have been researching for awhile. That first hatch would be sexable at hatch. Then you could breed them to what ever breed you want to get more of the traits you want but their chicks woulnt be sexable at hatch.

What color of egg would hens lay from a cross of a rooster being a blue egg gene and the hen having blue or green egg gene ..What color of eggs would this cross result .thanks

My guess is blue, green, or blue-green. I want to see pictures of 2nd generation eggs crossed back to a blue egg rooster. Kern

Hi! I hatched several Olive Eggers six weeks ago. All but one have a pea comb. But a few still have pink legs rather than green. Is that normal? Will they be able to lay olive eggs? They come from excellent breeding,..Eight Acres Farm. Thanks!
