Will feather sexing work for pure marans ?
No, contrary to what a lot will post. It is a sexlinked trait and those work with crossing breeds that have fast feathering males over slow feathering female--not all breeds have this trait in their gene pool. No single breed has this--they would be listed as auto sexing if so.

Some breeders think it works but then only get the same odds as flipping a coin. There are a lot of "methods" like that that do not really work. The sad thing, to me, is when chicks are sold as pullets using these methods.

There is even one for hatching eggs based on shape. Remember, you can seem to be getting results but anything less than 95 to 98 percent is not a method and is likely based on chance.

It's funny you say that. I think tractor supply must use those methods. I bought 6 pullets there and 3 were roosters. Luckily I managed to find them a good home but most know it's hard enough to find a home for 1 roo much less 3. That's why I want to get a head start with these. Hoping to find good homes vs people looking for a cheap dinner.. :(

Lol ok thanks. Any other signs to watch for?

Yes, size and comb growth. Also color and wattles.

Marans have very large combs and wattles. EEs usually have pea combs and very small wattles. You should be able to tell the difference by the comb and wattles by 4 to 6 weeks old. Also, crowing comes early to this cross.

The best way is vent sexing but that is reserved for experts.

Yes I don't feel comfortable vent sexing lol. I will leave that to the experts. They all look like they have taken after the marans side the most. I don't see any with the pea comb of the ameracauna. 2 did come out with orange legs though. I thought it was odd because all the rest have light yellow black colored legs. I will watch for growth and color. Thanks so much for the help. :)
