The Olive-Egger thread!

Has anyone noticed an egg laying performance difference between the breed combinations? I know most are looking for color. But I was just curious if anyone has noticed a considerable egg laying and size difference between the breed combos.

Most of Olive Eggers are based on Black Copper Marans, who lay jumbo sized eggs. So typically most of the olive eggers lay very large eggs. I have an Olive Egger based on Welsummer - she lays medium size eggs.

I also notice that OE based on BCM and AMeraucana are not very good layers - we get 4-5 eggs/week. The Welsummer based OE lays 6 eggs/week most of the time, better layer. ANy OE based on Legbars lay exceptionally well.

My son wants to breed his easter egger rooster to my blue copper marans hen. We were thinking that might produce an olive egger. Although I think a light one because the blue copper marans eggs aren't super dark. I am just now learning about the genes of this little experiment he wants to do.

It should (assuming the EE roster carries the blue egg gene.) and some of the shades may surprise you. I had a mixed hen, laid almost pinkish eggs, sort of a light pinkish brown, and she went broody and hid a nest. Father was a cream legbar so I expected a light minty green egg from the resulting offspring. Wrong, I get the most beautiful olive eggs. Who would have thought and I never would have hatched these eggs on purpose.
