The Olive-Egger thread!

Jenna,

He is a looker!!! I'm going to post pics of my guy as soon as his saddle feathers come in more!

Nope the only blue EE I had laid a pink egg. I do have some that have a blue wheaten look to them. Maybe they are throwing the blue chicks. I really wish I knew which one it was!!!

I'm taking a trip to New York in October!

Are there any OE breeders up North that will have eggs or chicks?

Jenna - he's a BEAUTY!

3chicmama - sure! There really isn't an "acceptable" or "not acceptable" olive green.

Shelleyb1969 - Um....nah, you don't want a Penedesenca. They're quite flighty.

I'm sure this has been asked before........but do olive eggers have to have a pea comb in order to lay an olive egg? Can a straight combed bird lay an olive egg?

It can happen, but the blue egg gene which is necessary to make the olive egg is very closely located to the pea comb gene, and they are usually inherited together. Some has suggested as much as 97% of the time... They can separate though, but it not all that common. If you wanted a straight comb olive egger, you'd need to find a straight comb EE and cross it with a dark layer.

My cross can be a bit flighty, but she's so worth it. Lovely eggs, and really, the only time shes freaks out is if I try to take eggs from under her. It's not that she's broody, she just really hates being touched.

Well, that I have! That girl is actually not flighty (none of my olive eggers are).

Alicefelldown - I probably shouldn't have said that, as I've only had two. I got them from a friend who hatched them, hers were flighty as well; but, they'd all be from the same bloodline, so maybe there are some bloodlines of Penes that aren't flighty?
