The Olive-Egger thread!

Quote:
Hey Wynette I found this post while lurking... I have some Barred rock x ISA browns that started laying at 17 weeks. What issues should I be looking for because they started so early? They were just little pullet eggs, one every few days. They're at 19 weeks now and are laying regularly medium sized eggs. Sorry it's not OE related, just curious what you might be referring to.

This thread got me matching up all the potential possibilities for big olive colored egg producing hens. I've got some EE's that just hatched, and some young BC roos from dark eggs that are 4 weeks old. Maybe by next spring I'll be seeing some dark green.

This
hen actually just died...well, was killed by her flock mates...about two weeks ago. She was the top of the pecking order. I came home to find her lying, almost dead, with a trail of 3-4' of intestines trailing behind her. Someone must have pecked at her bulging hernia, drew blood...and you know the rest. It was horrible for me to see, and I felt awful about her passing, but nothing I could have done for her.

I agree with this. Wheaten is just going to either remain hidden, or in the case of an offpsring haveing both copies, then it'll just be wheaten. What you want is a good, strong-like-bull RIR color that will "bust through".

Wynette,
Thanks for the link to the thread. So sorry for your loss. I wonder if it has to do with being too small at POL, or the eggs being too big. These girls are all bigger than their mamas when they started laying, and the eggs are still smallish. I hope that since they're crosses, they'll have a better chance of avoiding something caused by industrial linebreeding. Thanks.

I have Cuckoos will trade eggs......

Sorry Lotsapaints! Somehow I missed this post

...Are you talking trading Ameraucana eggs for Cuckoo Marans? Or some OE eggs for Cuckoos? Unfortunately, my Ameraucana aren't laying right now, and the Marans' eggs are not too great on fertility right now. Expect they'll be better in a couple more weeks...the roo keeps getting fiestier & fiestier with the spring weather! I'm also in AL, which is a long shipping trip to/from CA.

Not sure if it was the shipping or my lack of incubating experience at the time, but I didn't have much luck with the Ameraucana eggs that were shipped from Cree in WA.

Are there any OE breeders on this thread who are near Central Alabama? I can't find anyone around here interested in my two OE roosters. Any ideas on a good way to advertise these two. They're a little over 6months, and I'm only asking $10 each or even both for $15. Is that still too much?? I really just want to move them out, but I would like to at least get enough for a bag of feed. What do you guys usually sell yours for?

I get 10.00 for grown roosters I don't want to process. I try to sell them by 6 months or I freeze them for the family. I have a bunch now that I'll be fixing @ 14 weeks they are good for BBQ and easier to process. On my offer of trading eggs I just thought you wanted some Cuckoos and I would trade for OE's or Ameracaunas.
