The Olive-Egger thread!

Oooh! What colors did you get? I've been hatching ones that look like wellies- those are the F2s, and the ones that are blonde chipmnunks are OE x Am. Can't wait to see what they lay. That's awesome- so glad they survived the trip!

Definitely doing well, this is my first hatch too so I'm glad I didn't completely screw it up, lol.

I have had 9 hatch so far I think. Three are the lavenders

so precious. I definitely have some blonde chipmunks mostly right now. ANd I think one that looked more like a welsummer chick. I will have to check again. I know one or two are easter eggers and I can't remember which is which, lol.

I will send you some pics later

Unfortunately the wheatens never developed though

but so glad all the others are hatching!

That's great! Sorry about the wheatens though- I have one laying now- all broody! Who needs cochins when you have ameraucanas and faverolles?

Ok here is a pic of the ones I moved to the brooder (they kept trampling all the others still hatching.

THe very front one is an EE I think...the egg said W or EE.

The grayish one is a lav. Amer. and the back two are olive eggers.... I think. (Sorry the pic stinks, its my cell camera. I lost my real camera, ugh)

Happy Mtn- So do you think the ones that look like Welsummer babies sex just like welsummers? One of the olive eggers I moved to the brooder looks just like a welsummer chick, and it has very distint eye marks and v on its head, so I'm really hoping it's a pullet!

Your EE hen will continue to lay the same blue eggs that she always has, because her body's DNA is responsible for the color of her eggs. However, the fertilized eggs will contain DNA from both the hen and the roo. If you hatch her eggs, female chicks may grow up to lay olive eggs. They may have the DNA for blue shells from their mom and brown coating from their dad. It is possible that some will not inherit the blue gene from the hen (if she only has one blue gene and not two), and those chicks would grow up to lay brown eggs.

Hope that helps.

This afternoon I commented wouldn't it be neat to got our first Olive (green) egg today on St. Paddy's Day?? Guess what! We got out first OE egg when we checked the nestboxes this evening!

Now, wouldn't it be neat if we hit the lottery tomorrow on Pay Day?....

...well, I have to give it a shot....

Side note: It's not exactly the color I was expecting--kinda the color the water ends up when the kids are using watercolor paints or something...?? A pukey teal color. I'll try to get a good picture tomorrow in the daylight. Some of you experienced OE breeders--how accurate is that first egg? I'm really hoping the color will improve after a couple more.

Congrats on the first egg! Before you know it you'll be buried in them.
Mine change shades almost every day- sometimes they are speckled, sometimes they are darker or lighter. I even got one today that was almost blue- like she ran out of the terra cotta paint.

CONGRATS on that first eggie! With mine, they seem to start a bit darker and then lighten up a bit. They also lighten as the hen ages. I had one that laid eggs that looked like what it sounds you are describing; I ended up breeding her to a blue egg line of Ameraucana just to see what the offspring laid (they haven't begun laying yet). It's so much fun experimenting in this way!
