The Olive-Egger thread!

I put my Splash maran over my EE's. The EE hens are all colors. All the offspring where shades of blue or splash. Very pretty babies. I have a broody sitting on 15 mint green eggs right now from a Blue copper maran over EE's again the same hens as before all colors. I can't wait too see what hatches out! The hatch out should be the 18th of June. 5 long days lol. I'm thinking I will get dark blues and blacks out of it. The rooster is unproven so I'm a little concerned the hatch rate will be bad. If it is it wont be because of the broody. She is a fat fluffy BO who loves her eggs. She had 8 of 12 in March hatch out. I put 4 chicks in I had from an incubator in with her and took out the unhatched eggs. She protected her little flock till they where 4 weeks old. She chased the dog and the cat. She killed a snake and fed it to her babies. She walked them around the 5 acre area. Buffy even took them to the farm next door. They loved watching the chicks chasing bugs. They don't have chickens. My flock keeps the ticks down in our hollow. It is known my chickens own the dirt road and grass/woods on both sides. My corgi is the flock protector lol when she isn't chasing them! Now if I can just convince the hawk to leave the babies alone. We had a pair that picked off 16 this season. I built a new 10x20 grow out pen. It has a little coop off the ground with 2 nest boxes and room for 5 large birds. But works great as a broody grow out pen. I will be keeping them locked up in their till they are too big for the hawk around 8 weeks old. I will have too see how many hatch this time. If I get too many, a new mini coop will have to be made. CHICKEN MATH I hate it! Never know how many will come and go.

This is my most recent olive egger chick! Araucana x Black Copper marans. Obviously the chick is gonna grow up to be a pretty blue chicken, since the dad was a splash Araucana and the mother the BCM. The chick is double tufted and has a tail, plus fuzzy legs!

Hoping she is a pullet! I've had such a male heavy year, I could use some girls.

I crossed my EE to a ble Americauna--waiting to see if all blacks or some blues. will know soon. 4 pips and waiting

Stacykins, that chick's adorable! Hope it's a female for you!

I've been getting some very interesting shades of green in my olive egger pen this year. I had a female that was laying an almost "grass green" shade - VERY unusual & interesting. Well, she has since decided she's a male. She has stopped laying, and is now.....crowing. Well, a lame attempt at crowing. I've been trying to catch her on video and will post when I do. Sigh. Figures, the one laying the prettiest egg!

I had to do a customer hatch, so went on ahead & popped a few olive egger eggs into the incubator as well - a few will be the same cross as this crowing pullet, so hopefully I'll get another female and maybe I'll get lucky and it'll actually BELIEVE it's a female!

Sorry wynette that the pretty green layer has decided to be a lame crower!! I love the different greens that the girls produce. I do love the blues, too, just that the greens have more shades. It's like hunting for Easter eggs every day!!

Peach2u, I candled your eggs today..... finally had time. 1 was clear and 3 quit early. But all the rest had babies!

for some pretty babies.

I will get some pic's up of the Legbar x Penedesenca or welsummer crosses later they are getting bigger starting to see some cool coloring patterns. I can not tell if they where autosexing yet. of course they may all be roos....

I can't wait to see them. This is one of the crosses I think I want! I saw some hatching eggs for sale on ebay once and didn't get them and haven't seen them since! I have looked for them again many times! Please post pictures!

I bred my BCM roo to my EE hens and only hatched the blue/green eggs. Out of seven chicks that hatched....EVERY chick is black!

NONE of my EE hens are black, so does that mean that the roo is always going to produce black chicks?
What color are they?... the hens????
I have one hen that is buff with black flecks in her tail and some black in her neck feathers. I also have one with a partridge pattern. I have two more green egg layers, but I have never caught them in the act, so I'm not sure who it is. One EE is probably greyish white and black. She has a pea comb, but I can't think who the other one could be at the moment.

Quote: I may have this wrong, but chickens are really only one of 2 colors Black and Red. The patterns over lay the COLOR. So it sounds like your pullets/hens all are mostly black based so probably yes you will always get mostly black chicks.

I am trying to thin my flock and I want to get rid of my EE roo and just use an Ameraucana, but the fun of EE is the colors and I think my Ameraucanas will KILL that and just throw me solid colors. I have one EE roo about 2 months old, Black and white, thinking he will be that columbian looking type EE roo, like I had. But I also don't want to part with an Ameraucanas Roo. I like my roos.

Not sure any of my pullets will really throw multi color chicks either. Maybe a Wheaten Am roo would help IDK
