The Olive-Egger thread!

awww... he does!! Such a pretty rooster! To bad we couldn't keep him. We can't have roosters here (we arn't really suposed to have chicken either- lol).

Silly question but, in order to have an OE or even an EE the hen and rooster should have a pea comb?? I have some that I hatched and I'm pretty sure some of them have a single comb. Should I not breed them again if I'm looking for olive eggs?

THe hens will lay so you can see the color of the eggs; but I would choose a rooster with a pea comb. IMO.

You can also do test matings to better understand the effects.

Breed form those that LAY an olive egg. Forget about the comb if it's the egg colour you're after.

Thanks. I guess that means I should keep my "extra" roosters a little longer.

I hatched out 2 Olive Egger chicks yesterday.
My BCM pullet was killed several weeks ago (along with a bunch of my other girls), and I decided to set some of her eggs. I set 6 eggs from my BCM and 6 from my Ameracuana hen. Two of the BCM's eggs hatched and 3 hatched from the Ameracuana, even though the eggs had been in the fridge for over a week.

They both look like this - one has feathered legs and the other one doesn't. Both have pea combs.
The possible fathers were EE's and I had one SLW cockerel. I am not 100% sure which was the father but could a rose comb x straight comb give a pea comb?

I really hope at least one of the two is a girl!
My BCM pullet laid nice dark eggs, I'd say they were about a 7 on the color scale, so hopefully I can get some nice olive eggs...

Very cute chick!!! SOme people in Fl keep their hatching eggs in the refrig. THe anticipation of egg colors is the fun part.

Here are some of my up and coming that I'm loving!

Jack, the father, a one eyed, way too colorful Splash Copper Marans and Juanita, the mother, a beardless, blue laying EE, created these 3 ....full blooded sisters....the variety is just amazing!
