After getting a bunch of new chickens, we decided it was time to retire our old dusty coop and build a fresh one. We had an old metal playground sitting around gathering rust, so we thought, why not turn it into something useful?
The old coop:
Built about 13 years ago, made out of a kid's wooden playhouse with cover over the windows. Cute, but the floor was starting to rot. Was a good home for when we only had bantams, but now that we have standards, it's just too small!
The playground:
We took the slide and swings and everything off and gave it a good cleaning.
Building the frame! It has a hardwire cloth bottom for easy cleaning and one long roosting pole. That way no one will fight over having the highest roost. They all have to deal with the same height!
Side view!
Getting the walls up! We live in a very foggy area so everything had to be caulked against moisture.
There's two egg boxes on both sides. Knowing my chickens though, they'll lay their eggs in the garage.
The Fort Knox of doors.
That's all we have done so far. Still need to put doors on the egg boxes, seal up some gaping holes and add some decorative trim. A metal roof will be placed over the top. We're taking our time since our babies still have a ways to go before they're ready to sleep outside. Will update soon though!
