I noticed today that one of my BR hens had some black spots on her comb. So I investigated the rest of the flock and 3 out of my 5 have black spots. Ive read that its most likely fowl pox. Do I get the vaccine for the other 2 or let it run its course. They are eating and drinking well and nothing in their mouths. Please advise. TIA!

All 3 of mine have it, you're not alone!

Fowl pox takes anywhere from 3-6 weeks to completely clear up. Mosquitos are the primary vector. There is no treatment. The good news is that eggs are safe to eat and your chickens will be immune to that particular strain after it passes through your flock.

Can you post some pictures of the chickens? Black spots sound more like pecking marks. Pox can vary in shade from beige, tan, to dark brown or black. It is a disease that is spread by mosquitoes that lasts several weeks. Most chickens survive it. If I had only 5 hens, I would be tempted to let them all catch it, since they will be immune to it later. Most chickens recover from it unless they get a severe case involving the eyes or if they get the wet form of fowl pox, which causes lesions inside the beak, throat, and esophagus. Make sure they are eating and drinking.

I only have 3 and all 3 have it. They are still happy as clams!
