Thank you for the E-hugs! I needed to see that.. going through my videos lastnight trying to find my TB's poisoning video, I found videos of my old man an me showing.. brought back alot of memories and then seeing this post did it for me..

Thank you all for making me cry again and also for sharing your stories about such a difficult topic.

In 2009 i lost my old man, Bob. He and I had shown together for 4 years until he was too old for me to ride and his feet just couldn't hold me anymore. I sent him to live with a friend who had 4 grand kids and a very big heart. He was with them for 2 years before he went down and could not be picked up. He was 24 when he and I first met, which I, suppose made him 30 years old when he passed away. He was my first horse and my first love.

It cost them $150 to have him put down and it was free for them to bury him.

I was almost facing this prospect just a month ago. My "old man" is 19 and has navicular. In August, he started going lame and by early September was having problems walking without pain. His head bobbed every step and he could not even turn on the forehand. I was devastated. I started checking into the cost and the backhoe burial from a local guy would have been $100 - I'm sure the vet would have been $100 or more. The farrier came out and said the shoe change from an eggbar wedge to a regular aluminum wedge may have compromised his foot. He changed him back to the eggbar and he recovered so right now, I don't have to deal with it but it is certainly something I will have to deal with in the future. I bought my guy as a weanling from a production sale and he will live his forever days in my care. he will never know another owner and if he ever leaves this property without me, he won't breathe to know it. I wish I could afford to clone him. That's how special he has been to me. A once in a lifetime horse.

Just our farm call alone is up towards $60.00 these days from $25 a few years back. Don’t think we can get Euthanasia for $150 around here but I will ask the vet next time he comes out.

we lost our old draft horse two years ago to a ruptured colic, lots of vet bills, but he went out on his own without the vet's help. cost of the rendering truck for a draft horse in So. Cal is $600-800, depending on where you are. fortunately the neighbor sent his brother over with the back hoe, even though that's not technically legal. the neighbor's brother didn't charge us anything. but we did give him and the neighbor eggs and produce from our garden over the next year or so that we lived there.

Started looking into options for my old girl, she is 27 now. Vet call $60, euthanasia $150.+, back hoe $300 to $600. If can find one to come out + mileage 3 hour min. Pay travel time.
She is holding her weight and doing well right now. Thank you beetpulp.
