Part of the problem is that dogs are disposable for some people. They don't mind so much if a dog has bad hips and has to be put down....it will be cheaper to just get a new puppy. Puppies are cuter anyway. They make no life-long commitment to a pet....they are purely for their own entertainment. And when the dog is no longer entertaining, just give it away, dump it in the country or take it to the pound. Then they can get a new cuter one!

It really is too bad...stupid breeders, stupid buyers...

I actually visited a BYB's place once when picking up some free rabbits (she had 4 adult rabbits in a 2 x 2 wood-floor, filthy hutch).
She had (10) little indoor dogs---chihuahuas, poms, poodles, etc. (Pretty poor examples of their breeds)
And outside I could see a scruffy sheltie, a pair of huskies in a really cruddy dog kennel, and I heard barking from another set of kennels covered with tarps, and my brother saw a pit bull behind her shed.
And, of course, she told us she had a couple puppies for sale....

Agreed. My neighbor paid $200 for a chiweenie in front of Walmart. They said they couldn't leave her because the woman was going to take the remaining puppies to the pound if they didn't. No matter what I say, they refuse to rescue because they kill animals there (how does that make any sense?), and good breeders cost too much.

I tried for literally months to find a young, purebreed golden that fit my grandma's specifications at the shelter, but none were good enough. My great aunt does agility, therapy, and herding with her two BC's, and gave her a list of great breeders. But, they were all too expensive, so she bought her puppy from a byb advertising in the newspaper. To this day, she can see nothing wrong with her decision, and is now encouraging my aunt and uncle to buy a byb golden.

It is really a losing battle.

Flag those ads. Those sellers will then have to either spend precious time reposting the ad or find another place to advertise. Anything you can do to slow them down in their efforts to make a fast buck may give them a moment to rethink this. Probably not, but at least you'll feel better!

Also, if there's a seller advertising puppies as ready to take home before a certain age, many states or counties have ordinances/laws pertaining to that - as in (many ordinances/laws clarify) they're not to be removed from their mother before 8wks of age. If you can find such an ordinance pertaining to this in your area, I'd take those breeder's info down and then report them to the law for breaking it.

While it won't necessarily stop these idiots from breeding indiscriminately, every little bit we can do to fight against them helps!

Same thing going on up here. Litter of 8 puppies small re home fee @ $150 to help pay for food. What are they feeding them puppies Rib eye? and when did a Chihuahua become a farm dog?

Not to mention all the people rehoming puppies they just bought 2 or 3 weeks ago because, "My daughter doesn't like him."

I just looked in the local paper, apparently malteepoos are going for $1200, and that is the reduced price!

A report on the news last night said that at a shelter in California, well over half the dogs there are "purse-sized". Apparently it's all the latest rage there to buy these teeny dogs so you can carry them around in your purse. People aren't prepared for all the work it takes to housebreak, etc and are now dumping them at the pound. Isn't that pathetic?

I have many friends who work in shelters and rescue and the reasons people give are just pathetic.

The saddest is those who bought a new puppy so are dumping their senior dog at the shelter.

I could never work there because my people-patience is sorely lacking. Even worse, they are teaching the same attitude to their kids.

Carolinagirl, the problem with those people is that they weren't buying a pet, they were buying a fashion accessory. The same thing happens whenever there is a movie with a dog - bybs rush to fill the sudden market for these dogs. 101 dalmations had dal breeders in tears. People who had no knowledge of the breed, and even worse no desire to learn, wanted a puppy like from the movie. Then comes the rampant health problems from over-breeding, the over-flowing rescues, and the long task of cleaning up the mess.

My GSD forum recently linked an article on the fall of the GSD, celebrating the fact that the breed is falling out of favor with Hollywood and the public. How sad is that, to be excited that people DON'T like your dogs??? The "in thing" with shepherds right now is dark sable, the color of my boy Singe. The biggest problem is that sable is found mostly in working lines. Working line GSDs make good family dogs, don't get me wrong, but they do require a lot of work, training, exercise and patience. Singe can run for hours and still be ready to go, afterall that is the purpose of the breed. And if you don't keep his mind occupied, he will invent his own fun. Throw in a bunch of breeders interested only in color and not knowledgable about temperament and health and you have a disaster in the making.

I hope and pray Anatolian Shepherds never get popular. They are such an unspoiled breed. People are quick to blame show breeders for messing up the breeds, but it's really the BYBs and the puppy mills that are doing it.

It is really sad. Here we see a lot of dogs/cats that are adopted by unknowing people and the animal has babies a couple of weeks later. Or, there are 3 "known" dealers who contact you to pretend to be a rescue, offer to take your dog/cat for free (or you pay THEM!) and then the animal is right back up on CL.

Most of the adds on CL for BYB puppies are also on Ebay classifieds... google the phone number and any other add they have pops up. Going rate here for anything ending in "poo" is $300.

If you think it's bad now, wait till next month when all the "amazing presents" are posted after they realize what's involved in caring for an animal.
