Amer rises when the dew is still thick on the grass and the sun is still absent, but the sky is a slightly paler shade of indigo in anticipation for the dawn. The stars are invisible and the sky is covered in ribbons of cloud.
She rubs her chilly hands together and her three flamingos lower their left legs as one, as they are disturbed by her sudden movement. They have been resting there at their sister’s grave all night.
Amer’s dress is damp and swishes against the wet grass. She’ll have to change into a drier one in the castle, but she seems just as unaffected by that as exhaustion or her constant state of barefootedness.
Amer enters the castle and climbs a tower to her chambers. She liked to sleep closer to the sky, closer to Gwahir, and closer to her bird origins.
Here she would rest a few short moments before her service to the king and queen began again.
