The Quiet Ones . . .

Well, now, I'm a hopeful chicken-owner-to-be and I've been doing a lot of research (reading, mostly, and online) but I'm kind of getting the feeling that most of what I read concerning the actual chickens themselves is all "under ideal conditions" and who among us has ideal conditions *all* the time? I know I won't, I can't consider our weather ideal at all!

So I'd like to ask those of you that have chickens and actually have to live with them in an urban area, which chicken breeds are, in your opinion, the quietest and less likely to get a neighbor mad at you?

I am looking for some quiet breeds (particularly when egg laying!) since the neighbors on either side of us are literally mere feet away from our yard, perhaps as little as 10 feet. I will need to have their permission on paper, on record with Animal Control, before we get hens, and I want to be able to tell them that my chickens, who do make noise, will make as little noise as possible as I've chosen breeds known for their relative quiet. Besides, we have dogs, the dogs bark (though not as much as the muchly annoying pack of MinPins kitty corner from us across the alley, they are crazy and shrill, barking like mad things ALL THE TIME and at least our dogs don't do that!) and there are also a number of children on our street who play in the alley and, well, sound like kids when doing so. Surely there's a chicken out there who's quieter than a pack of shrieking children or terriers! LOL!

Unfortunately, I don't know which breeds those are! Can anybody chime in with their own experiences?

Much appreciated, thanks

My OEGBs are laying powerhouses---BUT--- they sure are noisy when they lay an egg. They are SOOOOO proud. I am getting another one today: the owner didn't want a noisy chicken that would make the neigbors mad. They called it, "The Screaming Chicken". Like a squeaky toy.

I reccomend you stay away from the OEGBs

:thumbsupwhen in doubt, go with banty cochins! they make hardly any noise at all- even the roos ( i have personal experience, actually- mallard has crowed exactly 15 times when we're around in all of his three years!) i actually live in the country, but i'm fairly confident that i'm giving you good advice. have fun with your new chickens, whatever breed you get!

*blush* I am not up on my chicken shorthand . . . OEGB? Old English . . . Good boys? Over Easy Green Blues? Other Eggs Grown Best?

Um.

What's an OEGB? Inquiring newbie minds want to know

Very cute, Laree! I love seeing pictures of other people's birds

The information I read online about the Old English Game Bantams (and the larger size too) wasn't very complimentary, some websites went so far as to say that the breed was actually used for . . . er, unsavory activities because the roosters can be quite aggro. Has that been your experience?

My standard Light Brahma is quiet as can be and she doesn't fly which helps keeping her in the yard

Also she is soooo friendly.

I had a silkie rooster and he was loud as all get out... and crowed all night long at every noise he heard! Had to rehome him.

ummm...no.
Game birds yes. OEGBs no.
OEGBs were (I believe) bred for small size and easy handling primarily for shows. They are easy to handle and small enough for children to present. I leant out my breed book, so:

ANYWAY--they are too noisy for you purposes. THe "Screamer" bird was just dropped off. She is a screamer.

I like my brahma, my buff brahma, and my buff orphington. The EEs are probably more quiet, but less personality. I don't think they sing the egg song at all. My Exchequer Leghorns are NOISY and sing everytime someone lays an egg. Everytime.
