The RE-Build of Les Farms

Beginning of week 3!

Anyway.. today the front siding has started going on. Rod said he estimates next week (Wednesday) he will be done. That is dependant on the subcontractors (Electrician mostly). Under the two front windows to the right and left we will have pop doors. I got to thinking.. I don't want to think about the goats coming in through the sliding door and eating the feed.

For those of you who have goats.. would this just be wishful thinking? Would they still get in through the pop doors? Trying to size them out so they are too small for the dogs (except Chloe) so hoping that will keep the goats out as well.

They are going to share a pasture, but not the same part of the barn. What should I implement to keep goats out of the feed troughs?

Aoxa, I have seen goats get in a small door. We rented our pastures out three summers ago and I swear they got in to my coops threw the hens door. These were not small goats. The largest one had crawled in but got her hips stuck. We had to pull her out backwards. I had to use electric wire to keep them out. They did not come back the next spring. Thank goodness.

Oh joy! Not.. lol

How big were your hen doors? My one on the baby barn is far too large. Henry can still get through it.

I read about someone who made kind of an 'L' shaped entry tunnel on their pop door too keep the goats out of the coop. Goats could get in the opening but couldn't make the turn in the 'L'.

now, my experience with dairy goats was fifteen years ago, but my next door neighbor/best friend raised them for 4H, and I used to help her with all the major chores (cleaning out the DL every spring!) and milk and feed if she went away. I even had bottle babies in my basement for a while

Anyhow, in my limited exerience goats are the houdini's of the animal world. They're great wonderful fantastic animals, but can get through spaces that seemingly defy the laws of physics! The chicken door would probably not be a problem for them to wiggle through, and I'd worry about a pregnant mama getting stuck. The L shaped entrance would probably work like a charm. In fact, that's such a brilliant idea that I'm adding it to my "someday barn" plans!

I love seeing the pictures of the re-build, and your chickens, and Henry. Always gives me a smile.

Those will keep the dogs from coming and going through the pop doors too. If you make them a double L it will help keep out the kids in spring time. Even our fainting wither boy can go through the typical pop door. He broke one of the auto doors here pushing his large rear through it.

I can't seem to visualize a double L.

wait... okay.. I kind of see it.. So this would work? If so, it's easy to make. I'm very happy about that!
