LOL aint it true.... Even now when I am struggling to build its all worth it because I can see their shiny eyes and rubber necking watching what I do. Even my little Miss Peggy who lost one of her legs in the attack. Shes coming along and keeps to her hospital coop watching me and her brothers and sisters. I have to get her a companion once the flock gets to go out into a run... Im thinking of maybe a Silky or somthing sweet and calm .... BTW I have two now that have names.... Miss Violet and Miss Peggy they are called Miss because they arent married.... LOL. Miss Peggy Is I believe a buff... very light tan with lavender under hues. The others I believe are Roayls... though I have to get pix. I am down to eight. Been up there every day this week just about.
So hinged lids for the roof. Now I can get the top secured and get those damndable kennel panels off the roof. And use them for what I wanted them originally .... Partitions between breed pens. Around the outside of the house will be Aviary panels on two sides and wood walls on two sides. And hinged peaked roofs for Shade and water protection. Two peaked roofs spanning twelve feet by twenty four. Mine will be a shallower peak with a center support because of the way the poultry house is layed out. Then I will repeat those roofs in wire for the runs.... should look ok.
That sounds like a good idea. I saw a really neat picture of a chicken "play land" in a book. It had a set-up like you're describing, but they had the aviary netting over the entire run. They also had little bridges and sand boxes. It was neat. I bet you could EVENTUALLY do something like that.
So, if you have an injured guinea (Miss Peggy), would you not be able to hatch a small batch of keets (hint, hint
) and maybe raise a keet with it? Or do you need to get a mellow chicken? Did you name your other guineas Mrs. whatever-the-males-name-is?
Oh yeah, I also forgot to tell y'all... ONE of my babies (they are just 2 months old) found her voice. Our neighbor came over to see our new run...BUCK-WHEAT BUCK-WHEAT BUCK-WHEAT.... I was cleaning out the chicken coop next to theirs (only wire separating them) and she saw the shovel... BUCK-WHEAT BUCK-WHEAT BUCK-WHEAT.... Of course, I'm running into the shop and house to gather my DH and children just to let them hear her. It's so flippin' cute.
I'm such a proud mommy. One of my 3 month old roosters just learned how to crow, too. He just sounds like a broken bicycle horn. They just crack me up. The rest of the crew is pretty quiet. I know its just a matter of time and they will all be butt-cracking or cha-cha'ing.
Oh I doo love Kazoo Crows..... WRT the other guineas in my little flock I know there is a pearl female in there I will have to isolate and band them accordingly once I get things a little more organized in the coop.
I haven't banded any of mine. Or course there are only 5 of them and they all are different colors. There are two of them that are similar, but have small differences.
I've read so much about lighter colors being more prone to predators. What about pied? My cinnamon pied is darker on top.
I can picture your layout, Deb. How many more kennels are you going to get?
