The restrictions are on my side, but you won't belive...(LOOONG sorry)

Ohhh Boy!

People are strange. I have a neighbor doing the same thing,

Just remember the serenity prayer

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Also don't respond ... it's what they want.

But complain your little heart out here, as We love and support you!
Nothing better than an ear to listen and a heart to sympathize with.

AND A WHOLE LOT OF SUPPORT!

You need to be intimately familiar with your CC&Rs. Chances are that a vote cannot even be taken on something that is not previously noticed to the entire neighborhood. Business itself cannot be conducted at an annual meeting if a quorum is not present. (There are ways of getting around this, such as absentee ballots due at some time after the meeting, however this prevents voting on anything that is not on the ballot.)

I too am my HOA president. Fortunately we don't have anyone complaining about chickens in the neighborhood. I would have to say, though that probably 1/4 to 1/3 have now or have at some time had chickens. Only three of our 8 board members don't have chickens, and one plans to acquire some next winter. Another had some, but is trying to cur down on the number of pets.

Learn a few good phrases such as "thank you for your input/opinion" and "I'll look into that and get back with you."

Do get back with with them, and reference and quote any relevant CC&R provisions, city or county ordinances and/or state law. Be polite, but business-like.

"Dear XXX,
I want to address your concern about poultry in the neighborhood.

City/county code, as set forth in UUU says, "whatever it states."

WWW HOA CC&Rs state in paragraph X on page Y, "blah, blah, blah." Furthermore, the requirement to change their provisions is laid out on page Z, paragraphs A-G, and states, "blah, blah, blah, blah." If you wish to pursue a change to the code, you will need to follow these procedures. However, please be aware that according to state and federal law (you really need to research this to make sure it is correct), changes that remove rights of the members cannot be retroactive. Anyone who currently is in accord with the CC&Rs could not be required to remove their birds."

You might also mention that making rules specifically tailored to one individual is generally illegal.

What state are you located in? How long are your CC&Rs, and are they available online?

I like Sonoran Silkies suggestions! You might also question, if they don't like the idea of chickens, why did they move into an area designed for mini farms??? As to the coyote question, I believe that is why you just got Hoss isn't it? To keep predators at bay?

If you want to get mean, you could hint you are thinking of getting goats and sheep next!!

I don't think there are any sheep in my neighborhood, but I know there are goats down the street. In fact, some of the neighbors ask to BORROW them to trim low-growing branches, and to eat their grass.

Guineas would probably bother people more than goats, though. Or peacocks would be another annoying choice.

If they don't like it, then they shouldn't have moved to a property that "exists for residential mini-farm, mini-ranch living." Ignore them and don't pay attention. They can't do anything with 75% vote of all homeowners, so let them waste their own breathe until they get tired. Good luck!! I think you need all you can get!

First, you have a beautful home and coop. Second, Have you considered that the person doing all the troublemaking is jealous of what you have.If you have the support of most of he community, just smile and wave at them everytime you see them.Have the lady that makes signs on BYC( can't remember her name, but she makes beautiful signs) Make you a sign saying your name and farm and make a beautiful post to put it on and plant climing flowers around it.Jealousy will eat her alive, while you enjoy your chickens. Marrie

If your "friends" turned on you they are not your friends. Be thankful you found that out. People like that you do not need. In fact if I were in your shoes I would give them a big smile and thank them profusely for making that clear to me.

Want some peacocks? I have got lots. Loud ones, too.

I would not give them free eggs, what if they ate it and got sick (not from eggs but from something else like bad tacos from Taco Bell). Keep the eggs yourself unless they ask for some or sell them with a permit or license.

those kind of people got nothing better to do with their hands and minds. I like Sonoma's ideas!
