The Rhodebar thread!

Good plan. The HRIR from a good breeder are shockingly (and pleasingly) different than hatchery stock (even the "dark-phase" RIR they sell for more).
I don't suppose you know any good HRIR breeders who might have hatching eggs available at this time of year?

I will ask for you.

Thanks, that would be awesome, especially if i could get some at about the same time the rhode bar eggs arrive so i can incubate them together. The rhodebar eggs will ship on the 9th, assuming his hens lay for him while he's gone.

Very new to this so please keep that in mind.

Hatched Rhodebars yesterday and was wondering why my males look so different. One is very dark and the others are blond. Any info is VERY helpful! Eggs came from auction. Thanks!!

I'm a newbie but I think maybe those darker ones are only single barred males? Perhaps RIR was crossed in recently and they don't breed true like the double barred males. Where did the eggs come from? Curious only because I have my first Rhodebars in the bator now from eBay seller in OK. His photos show one of his cocks is single and one is double barred (the single barred cocks are the most gorgeous dark red barred color that don't breed true, but the double barred are the ones with the black/white barred tails and lighter red barred bodies that breed true for autosexing).

And hey, more experienced persons, if I am confused and what I wrote above is incorrect, please correct me! I want to know that what I think I know is actually worth knowing.

Mrshawman,

I would agree that its possible that you have a single barred male there or possibly even with a little wheaton left in it. that chick looks a lot like what nic said you would be watching for in when you back crossed to RIR to improve the type. because you would likeley still get a few of those when crossing a roo from that backcross back onto pure rhodebar hens. You should be able to select your best looking pullets from this hatch with the best of your double barred roosters and when you hatch those you you should get all pure rhodebars. This is just theory for me at this point, so please keep us updated on their development. then we will know if I'm full of it :p

The eggs came rom ebay auction, said to be Geenfire line. These are pics that were shown.
Same seller as what are in my incubator right now I think, from Oklahoma. :) Exact same pictures. Would a more experienced person please comment on the lighter hackles vs. even hackle/body color on these cocks for us? The photos of his hens were more barred than I've seen:
