The Rhodebar thread!

Not unless it was bred in prior to GFF. I had a project group that were barred rock x red were coming along nicely until Marvin reminded me they were not going to carry the e+. They were all called or given away. I did see some of those cockerals that grew out and looked pretty good other than not being auto sexing.

I see a lot of RB with partridge-y and laced feather patterns that are "straight from" GFF. That's not right, is it? They should be red barred only on the hens?

They should not have lacing and if they are more partridge/penciled that would tell me they are lacking the Columbian gene as well. Which would indicate they have been bred to something other than a RIR or a poor RIR carrying either Co/co or co/co.

This is one of my young cockerels, he's practically orange overall, like a striped popscicle. Most of his black is in his tail as compared to my second boy.

This is my second cockerel, he's very broad chested and carries himself like a king, but his coloring is uneven. His chest is getting more black as he's feathering is coming in, and he has chocolate, red, and a few buff portions.

Is there hope for either as breeders? Or should I try finding another roo?

Hello everyone! Great thread. I am looking for a pair (male and female) of good line Rhodebars . I am wanting them about the age of 6-12 months. Please message me if anyone has them. Thanks!

I have a few breeding pairs and trios that I am selling over the next few months but they are all this year's hatch.

I think that most (if not all) of the foundation stock of Rhodebars here in the States have come from GFF. While there are some people moving forward with improving their line most are just breeding the birds they got from GFF and not doing selective breeding or bringing HRIR into their lines. That being said, in my opinion, anybody moving into Rhodebars at this point and time should realize that it would be an extremely rare case that you could get birds of the quality that they may be anticipating. In other words, it is most likely that any birds you get are going to need work to get them to the standards that they should be.

Well said Penny. Most people do not have a desire to spend multiple generations crossing in improvements. However, I would like to think that as much improvement as the breed needs that people breeding within the breed are at least doing some heavy culling.
In reality I suspect a lot of people are selling everything they can breed to make a buck - cruel but true.
But the optimist in me would like to think that is not the case.

That said... I sent a box of 4 day old cockerels to a school today. I didn't send the darkest ones or any females... All the others went however. There is just no reason to keep them. And I sure won't sell them. Even giving them away to someone who wants to breed would mean perpetuating less than the best I can produce and that just seems unethical to me.
That said... I also suspect most people have no clue how much improvement is really needed or how easy it could be to lose their auto sexing ability if they are breeding questionable yellow chicks.
