The Rhodebar thread!

Pics
Pics aren't to good but you can see the dark spots on the heads and the black lines coming from the eyes. Not all have those marks. My last hatch (different line) I got many that had more of the chipmunk marking but none hatched that way from this line.

what a bunch of cutie pies...! autosexing should be as easy as to allow your grandparent to spot two different chicks and ask you, what breed is this one and what breed is that other one... you could be onto something here, but not they would not be as easy to autosex as Rhodebar...

but an interesting turn of even has occured, Chris(heritage RIR breeder, he often post here) has revealed that when he crossed one of his RIR birds to a Black Breasted Red game he ended up with chicks that looked alot like wildtype chipmunk birds(this could be due to the heritage recessive melanizers restricting dominant wheaten dominance) what does this means? it means that tyou could spot the eWh/e+ barred male chicks at hatch, also eWh/e+ females, this means culling the homozygous Wheaten(eWh/eWh not good for your project) would be alot more easy..

here is the link when Chris said this

The other RIRs that I hatched had 5 chipmunk striped chicks and all 5 are pullets. Would those RIR have been crossed with something else to cause the chipmunk down or is that common with the RIR? Those are the birds I was planning on using in my Rhodebar project. The RIR rooster used to create my black sex-link cockerel also came from that same line.

Here's one of my Rhodebar @ RIR chicks at 3 days old, she is about 6 weeks old now...Also hatched a Roo had a lighter spot on his head ( Will try to update phto's this weekend!) I know I
have to mate the pullet back to the male Rhodebar Roo when old enough...Where do I go from there?

Similar. I hatched out 6 pullets, 5 with the chipmunk stripes who are all getting more of the darker, mahogany color. The 6th pullet was hatched out without stripes but did have the black spot on the head, and is more of the redder color. Not as red looking as PRs but not nearly as dark as the other pullets. All of the cockerels hatched out without stripes or spots and are not nearly as dark as the dark pullets, with 2 of the cockerels being darker then the others. They are about 21 weeks old now.

The pullets that hatched with the stripes are the ones that I was considering using in a Rhodebar project.

so this chick in this pic is a RIRxRhodebar chick? if this is true then sexing them would not be any issue at all, you will now the ones with the white headspot are males....

since your are able to spot this eWh/e+ chicks and their barring(at least on Males) I would suggest to keep that Male chick you are talking about, and cross him back to the best RIR hen you have, why do this? this will emprove the color of the Rhodebar a whole lot..

this will be your game plan ok..

RIR/RB Male cross to RIR Hens.. Hatch about 60 eggs,

out of this 60 eggs 50 percent will be pure eWh/eWh(they will look like normal RIR chicks) these are culls...
so this leaves you with about 30 eWh/e+ looking chicks.. but only 50% of them will have the Barring gene(females and males) thats about 15 of them, lucky for you, you will be able to spot the Barred males just as you did before(white headspot) cull the unbarred males and hens as soon as you can. keep the barred males and do a Barred brother and and barred sister mating..

please keep us updated on the Male chick you are talking about ok, I´m willing to be he will turn out to be just like Tim Adkerson Awesome Red Barred male..Why.. he has only one copy of Barring so he will not be as diluted as a double barred male...

I would like to purchase some heritage RIR chicks to cross into my Rhodebar line. Is there anything in particular that I should look for in the pullets physically aside from good brick type and a rich dark color? I hope my question makes sense..
