The Rhodebar thread!

Thanks so much for this thread.
My first Rhodebar eggs arrive this week - finally!
I have production RIR and have had for years.
Actually, my great grandfather had RIR in IL all the way to 1930... so it's family thing.
I began by looking for better quality heritage RIR stock and have not found what I'm looking for.
That is how I discovered the Rhodebar.
I am fascinated by them and fell in love with them.
I am STILL looking for a nice RIR breeding pair to cross with the Rhodebar... welcome any suggestions on that one.

In the meantime... am hoping I'll get a good hatch out of the 15 eggs I have coming... very excited.
Am hoping my long term plans with the Rhodebars work out... too many if's at this point....
IF I have some decent healthy cockerels and pullets from this hatch...
IF I can successfully find some RIR with good type...
IF my production hens can contribute without creating a nightmare...
IF IF IF

I'm starting from the ground up here and plan to breed only single bar roos... we'll see how it goes.

Here are twelve of the sixteen Rhodebar eggs from Greenfire lines I will be putting in the incubator today.
With all the talk about the different colors of eggs people have, I thought I'd take a few pics.
I had to use a flash, so some of the ones in the middle are a little shinier, but they do not appear to be green at all.
Now the wait begins...

For those who have purchased Rhodebar chicks from Greenfire ...

What kind of mortality/fatality rate have you seen? I got 8 pullets and one cockerel in February. One pullet quickly broke two toes around 5 weeks, which eventually healed. A second succumbed to very Marek's-like symptoms around 6 weeks. A third seems to have a tendon issue around 6 weeks, but is gamely hanging in there. Just lost another one at about 8 weeks to more Marek's-like symptoms. Two deaths, two injuries out of 9 chickens is high for me.

Greenfire assures they are vaccinated, and of course the vaccine is only 90% effective ... Just wondering if this is a line that really is less resilient/facing a higher-than-normal mortality/fatality rate than other breeds?

What are others' experiences?
