The Rhodebar thread!

My SC RIR go broody but the RC not so much. Haven't had a RB go broody yet but suspect I will since I'm breeding that in.
As a side note... Rhodebars shouldn't have any Rock blood in them.

Oh dear. I said rock! Meant barred something. :/
She is in a broody breaker. I went to refill her waterer because she knocked it over in there, she ran faster than I've ever seen a hen run back to the nest box. Guess she'll be in there for a few days. I don't need another broody right now.

Sigh! My cockerel pen is on a seperate part of the farm - it just prevents chaos that way. I had marked my first and second choice F1 to put back over my RIR. I had several dozen cockerels from 2 breeds in that pen and wouldn't you know... No lgd. Yes I lost 4. And of course my 1st and 2nd choice F1 were 2 of the 4. ARGH!
I was going to move my first choice to the hens this week. Guess I'm a few days too late. So... Now I have to decide if I'm going to use my third choice F1 cockerel or if I should just stick with using the F1 pullets (who should start laying any time).
I suppose I can take a pic of him and maybe @niclandia, @melroseladi, et al.. can tell me if they think it's worth it.
Did I mention I am NOT happy! He a nice cockerel dang it!

Sorry Redridge, I have 3 RB/HRIR cockerals about 3 months old maybe a couple weeks older. I will give you one or two if you want them. All of them look the same . I will try and get pictures to show you. I know it might be awhile before breeding age and I do not know what or if any set backs because of genetics with the HRIR .( Mine are from Steven(Sgribble)(HRIR) .
Breeding a f1 cockeral back to HRIR is that done to improve more on the body type or color? Both? The offspring of that combination will yield ?? Thanks, Michael

I have a group of Rhodebars that need to go :)
I figured I'd offer them to anyone here first, 3 M 4F, little over a month old.
They're pretty guys, but being a novice, I just don't feel that this is the right breed right now (see how nice I said I think they're jerks lol?).
There are pics of the males a few posts back, I can get some of the gals.
You can have all 7 for what I paid for eggs:)
Prefer pick up but will definitely consider shipping.

The broody breaker. Poor girl..but she was clucking less this morning..actually heard a nice normal hen cluck, then, cluck, cluck.

She's under the apple trees, and gets visitors often. :D

Thanks Michael for the sweet offer. I have another dozen cockerels to choose from. I was just being whiney because it's always the favorites that bite the dust.
Yes you will set type better choosing an F1 cockerel with good type to put back over your HRIR. Only 1/4 of each sex will be keepers though, so breeding a lot more than just what we did for the f1s well be necessary.

I'm new to BYC and new'ish to Rhodebars. I have been following this thread for some time now to learn as much as possible. I have one Rhodebar pullet just starting laying, a 3 mo old pullet and six RIR hens that I had planned to cross to my double barred Rhodebar rooster. I just got them separated from the main flock and nicely situated in their very own chicken tractor to get the program started. Tonight after work I found the rooster dead up in the shelter. Now I need to find a Rhodebar rooster in the Oklahoma City/Norman area. Does anyone have a double barred rooster they could sell?

So sorry to hear. How did he die?

So sorry. I have quite a few to choose from right now but i'm in TN.

It looks like a skunk got him. We are still in the process of moving in and I haven't had a chance to clear out all the varmints. I moved the first group of pens last Satuday and got up Sunday morniing to two coyotes looking throught the wire at my Marans. I managed to shoot one before they got away.
