I'm overweight and have ceased to care...this is me and that is life. Of course I'd love to be slim but not to suit the world's view of what women should look like..just so I can tie my shoes without holding my breath!![]()
I have utter and complete faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and am proud and humbled to say it.
I can change my own oil, my own tire, can run my own chainsaw, mower, saw, drill or any other equipment without a man's assistance. I've been paying my own way since I was 14 yrs old. I don't think that women should be helpless and I do feel they should feel honored to be good housewives, good mothers, and good partners to their husbands. There is honor and nobility in being a mother and a wife. Any other profession is a part-time job, IMO.

I read all the time...no romances, very little mysteries, no murders, no sci-fy, no best sellers. Just good, old stories.

I love my kids and never had "terrible twos" or "terrible teens" like most folks say they have...I enjoyed every stage of their lives and told them so every day. I think they are wonderful people and would feel the same if they were not mine and just someone I met. Yes, I spanked my kids and didn't allow them to do what all the popular kids were doing...and they would walk through fire for me. As I would for them.
I'm just not the typical American or Earthling and I like that fact...but not many others do. People are not comfortable with the one animal in the herd that is a different color/stripe/kind. I am she. Their problem, not mine.I'm only a pilgrim here and am just passing through. I never intended to make this my home.
Yep...supposed to make them change their mind, not cool off the hormones. It doesn't even have to be a cold bucket of water...just any ol' water will do. Just a little attitude adjustment.....![]()
Wouldn't it be nice if, when we start to get those baby yearnings, someone takes a cold glass of water and throws it in our face?![]()
Sad dayI left everyone to free range our backyard like usual. It was cloudy and a little windy when we left. I kept thinking that I probably should have kept them penned today.
Returned from church and noticed a hawk sitting on the ground in the backyard. He appeared to be eating. He was. Apparently he got my youngest and littlest silkie mix. She or he was just 10 weeks old and probably didn't get to cover fast enough. Only the lower body remained when I shooed off the hawk. The other older girls & silkie roo were hiding in the nearby hydrangea bushes. A younger ones were all huddled in the coop. The coop was wide open and the gate door open. He could have taken my little one from the coop or maybe she just wasn't fast enough to get inside.
Either way I now have 13 chickens and one sad heart. I know the hawk was hungry and probably getting ready for the storm too, but it still makes me sad she's gone so soon.
She's the tiny black one on the right.

I spent many, many years working with parrots, and your bird's beak really resembles the beaks of parrots with Psittasine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) I am not a vet, and I have no clue if chickens can contract this virus. Does she show any feather abnormalities?I am absolutely learning so much from this thread!! Started everyone on the FF yesterday and it is taking them a little while to warm up to it, but I am sure they will.
Bobbieschicks - I am so sorry for your loss! I had the same thing happen,I came home from church to find the hawk on one of my girls. That was my first loss
I was wanting to post a few pictures and see if anyone has any ideas as to what is happening to my girl's beak. It has been going on for about 2 months. I took her to the vet, who works on birds at our local zoo. She did not even know what is going on. I would love it if anyone has any ideas and what might be a remedy to get these wart looking things to go away!! Oh and no one else is showing any signs of this on their beaks. Thank you so much for any help!

O.K. Another testiment to FF and the road less traveled way of keeping chickens. We were able to re-home our extra boy. Frank was the one who I ended up sending to a new home. He went back to the friend that we got him from as a scrawny wee thing to begin with. I never could get a good pic that showed how he glistened and how he sparkled. His future was so bright you needed to wear shades to look at him. Our friend was "blown away" and said he would be a keeper. Even though Frank had only been on FF just under a month now, his condition was spectacular. He will have his own flock of leghorns, (It was so hard to let him go....and I confess, I did hold him close when I put him in the chicken carrier) . So we have kept Morris (the one that's the avater) and there is a general peace in the flock this afternoon. Team A & Team B are able to merge now. I will try and see if I can find pics to show Frank before and after, but I don't think anything I have will do him justice.
Oh he sure did....I'm sure he'll be on here soon. My husband gave him the gist of things and he's interested. He has lovely birds, healthy etc. already, and he culls etc. But is quite interested in kicking it up a notch. DH told him about some of the yolk sizes we've been having too.Oh, no! Shades of the 80s....That is such great news! Did your friend want to know your secret to Frank's glossy glow?![]()
Sorry...Black Australorp (BA) But that's not what she is!LM,
Please forgive my ignorance. I do not understand what you are asking.I do not know what BA means. This picture is of my BBS English Orpington pullet. (Black/BluesSo/Splash)
Beekissed - Thank you so much for the advice!! I will try all that you said and report back. I am not sure sure how easy it will be for me to open up that wart things though! I am willing to try anything and everything to see if I can get these to go away!
Wax Myrtle - She has not had any kind of feather issues. What really stumped me is my vet is an Avian vet and she said she had not seen anything like it before. She said she would be concerned if the warts were on flesh areas not on the beak. My thought was some kind of fungal growth too but she didn't think it was. I expressed my concern on it growing around her nostrils and closing them off but she did not suggest doing anything?? Crazy to me that she had no suggestions. I will read up on the disease you posted. Thanks for the info!
Bobbieschicks - keep an eye out for more! I had 2 more hawks come back over that next week after the first attack. I scared them off of a hen both times and saved them due to my roosters sending off their wonderful "hawk alarm". I ending up putting deer netting over areas of their 1/2 acre free-ranging territory and haven't had a loss in 2 years. So far so good! I'm with you on everyone needs to eat but not on my chickens that are my beloved pets!
