That's what kind of neighbor I am...will help you with anything, give you anything, loan you anything but won't be looking out my window in your direction on purpose. Everyone should have a right to pee in their yard if they want without worrying about mooning the neighbors!

I've expressed my thoughts on killing and eating one's own animals before with you. I admire anyone who has the ability to slaughter and process their own animals after giving them a good and natural life. Up to now I have not had the courage to do it. I truly don't believe a person has a right to eat meat if they are not willing to carry out the slaughter. Having said this, my beliefs are not in accord with my actions. I continue to buy packaged meat for my family and, in my case, abstain most of the time. Knowing what factory animals go through--I do not want to participate in their suffering.
I think there are several other reasons, besides a lack of couarge, that account for my reluctance to kill my own animals. First, I have never seen it done and I just know I would botch the process. I recall a story of a person on the forum who did just that in front of his child he was trying to instruct. Very traumatic for both of them.
Having said all of this, if I did not have the luxury (and it is a luxury) of going to the store and buying good meat alternatives I would not starve. I would probably eat "anything" available if my life depended on it. I am the same person who can be moved to tears by a dead animal in the road (what a waste) yet believe if it came to it I would kill one of my animals including the dogs if I were starving.
All these contradictions. I have come to terms with them for the most part.
I think this is a very honest post and we all should admit we live with some level of contradictions in our lives. As Beekissed said, it is a product of the machine our Food Industry is. All you can do is take those baby steps to sort out the contradictions starting with the ones that you can take care of and/or bug you the most sometimes. That's the motion I find myself in consciously or unconsciously. I try to be conscious though...but it's tough in a busy life.

I agree...it's harder and harder in today's world to concentrate on how to live and how to do it well. I find to concentrate on it I have to distance myself from the world more and more. The more I do so, the more my head clears and I can think an uninterrupted thought.

I so agree with you.

I agree.

When it came time to cull the extra roos, I picked a time when DH wasn't home, so I'd HAVE to handle it on my own. I'm not proud that I "killed chickens", but I was proud to know that I can handle it if need be. Like I said before, I fear that we've all become to dependant on the system. In order for me to change that personally, I'm going to have to start doing some "hard" things. Culling those roos wasn't easy (I shed a tear or two), but I did it, and next time will be easier.

I can't continue to "preach to my sons" without making some changes in my own life!

LOL. I think it's true Bee, but you do have a gift for talking to people on here. I imagine you a great people person. I blame the computers and the gadgets myself for my waywardness....as I sit here typing on my computer...HA! My Contradiction. Thank God for my chickens, kids & family to keep me grounded.

Being in the outdoors and focusing on that garden or your animals ...very satisfying and mind clearing to be sure.

Exactly this! We are charged with stewardship over these animals. I take it seriously and all the way to their deaths. I strive that they have as normal a life as possible while they are here. That they are comfortable, sheltered, fed appropriately and enjoy natural good health. Then that they die quickly and are purposed for what they are here for...as food.
That is the single perfect word right there "STEWARDSHIP" it encommpasses all aspects of animal husbandry, including the killing of animals. And a simple "Thank you sister chicken for the life you are about to give to feed my family" reconnects one with that stewardship. It is a concept embraced by many cultures so that means something in itself.
